Ford apparently did some crazy stuff with thier electronics . I helped a friend with a 2001 Ranger diagnose a similar problem a few years ago. He had issues with his dome light but was experiencing transmission problems simultaneously. Simply enough, a fuse replacement fixed his problem. The "courtesy light" fuse had failed. I suspect you may find a problem along this avenue. Check the switches that activate the dome lights for proper ground and operation. Do the doors align on the car properly? Bad alignment from collision damage or worn hinges could cause the switch to activate/deactivate at random as the car tools down the road and the chassis flexes
