timing belt or chain

Just bought a 2004 Ford Focus SE Wagon and two mechanics told me it's a timing chain and not a belt. Does the timing cover have to be taken off to find out what it is ?

http://www.gates.com/downloads/download_common.cfm? file=GatesTBR.pdf&folder=brochure --- check this out. According to this if its a 2.0 L dohc 4cyl ( vin# 3 or 5 engine code) it is belt and that engine is an interference engine. If it's a 2.0L sohc 4cyl (vin P) it's a belt and non interference engine.

If it came with the optional 2.3L VIN Z engine, it has a timing chain.

I have a 1.6 16v petrol focus (DFW) does it have Timing chain or belt? Because i cant find anything on the onwers manual

2004 ford focus ztec engine have a timing belt, i have a 2004 focus wagon se, has replaced the belt and water pump 2x .

u are all wrong it has a rotory multply position cam. it never needs adjustment Or replacement
