What is the difference between a 4x4 and a FX4?

The available Ford Work Solutions package is offered on XL and XLT models and adds an in-dash computer that is customizable to suit commercial users and fleets. Also available is the FX4 Off-Road package (4x4 models only) that includes an electronic locking rear differential, all-terrain tires, hill descent control, skid plates and Rancho shock absorbers.

FX4 describes the trim level of the truck, which is a 4dr SuperCrew 4WD Flareside. 4x4 simply designates a vehicle with 4 wheel drive.

Better front shocks, electronic 4 wheel drive switch, skid plates on gas tank and transfer case, 3" leaf springs, and the Fx4 decal.

I read a FX4 was a 31 spline rear with auto lockers with skid plates and all the BKAH BLAH BLAH. Basically my 2000 ford ranger xlt step side is a FX4. After I remodeling the whole 8.8 rear differential to 31 spline spartan lockers automatic 4x4.
FX4 is NOT a trim package. It is skid plates, different tires, shocks etc. The exact options depend on the truck. F150, 250 and Rangers have different components as part of the FX4 package. The options also vary for different years.
