my engine stop/start button isn't working and I can't turn it off

My 2013 A8L v6 won't turn off.  The start/stop engine button is dark (not illuminated)

do you have the brake pedal down..? then hit the button....

Yes, I've done everything. The key is that the start/stop engine button does not light up so it is somehow disconnected. I was hoping someone knew how to "wake it up"
