My rear passenger side door will not latch and stay closed, any ideas?
Asked by xmotorcity Sep 06, 2015 at 02:52 AM about the 2013 Ford Escape SE FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I went through the past posts and found answers to questions about how
they cannot get their rear door to open but nothing on the opposite end. I
have a 2013 Ford Escape and the rear passenger side door will not latch
closed. I just opened it while cleaning it out and it won't close now. I've tried
switching on/off the locking safety feature and the little things I could think
of but no luck. I live in apartment complex so my vehicle is sitting
unprotected not to mention I am supposed to go on long trip in two days.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated, especially since its holiday
weekend so doubtful I'll be able to find service help tomorrow, let alone if
vehicle is still there in morning.

ok ok here look at the latch part of the latch and see if the clasp is closed.here I have a better idea I have added a video. ok if this is not it and the clasp is is clasping and then just opening back up again with out operating the handle it could be that the that either the latch is bad or you have a stuck rod on the inside of the doo that is holding the latch open like the handle is pulled. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmWsM-TSaKo

Thanks for your quick reply, much appreciated especially with it being late night on holiday weekend. The clasp is not stuck down, stopping the door from latching. I am able to move the clasp, open and close position, but clasp won't catch to keep secured. Do you happen to know if this part is going to be a dealer only part (meaning I wouldn't be able to p/u till Tuesday) or could it be p/u from auto store like a Pep Boys or Auto Zone so could get installed myself tomorrow?
let me see and if so I will give you the part number
i looks to be a dealer or wrecking yard item only. although I do think that you should call the parts houses to make sure. I have been wrong in the past. just FYI if you have a friend that has a business you should order the part through them for the discount
xmotorcity answered 9 years ago
Thanks again, your a huge help. I will try to follow your advice on friend with business to get discount as it sounds like the part might be expensive. Now i'll just have to keep an eye out for the next couple nights to make sure I keep the low lifes with sticky fingers from going thru my non-locking vehicle. Thanks again for your help.
if you have to pull that side close to some thing so they cant get the door open.if there is a wall or post or another car you have.
Have a pro look at it since it is a safety issue-
Mi driver's side rear door started doing this and I taped it shut so I could get to work yesterday. I called the dealer and they are having me bring it in to look at it. The service manager said, and I quote, "What people have done in the past with this problem is to connect a tie down to the inside handle on the opposite side to secure the car." I have put hundreds of thousands miles on my 14 different cars over the years and have never had a door that wouldn't stay shut. What a disappointment Ford! This may be a recall issue from what I read.
I have the same problem Saturday Sept. 3rd , 2016 with our 2013 Ford Escape SE model. I was checking tire pressures this past Friday night to be ready to leave on trip early Saturday morning and noticed the rear right side passenger door was slightly open . I pulled the door open as it was not latched and tried to close it. It would not latch. I checked the latch mechanism and it would move to open and closed by using small flat bladed screw driver. I used the key fob to try to actuate the lock and unlock feature and the clicks could be heard locking and unlocking the other doors and also the door that would not latch. I also checked the small white plastic button that keeps kids from opening the doors when they are in the rear seats. Still couldn't see or determine why door wouldn't. close properly. We live two miles from Ford AutoNation dealer. ( where we bought the Escape when it was new. & now has 63,000 miles on it) . Saturday am , we put our luggage in back. I tied door shut with tope and we left the house and drove to the Ford dealer. I told service attendant about problem with door , and could they help fix the door quickly as we had to drive to Atlanta to catch our flight there. They had our car no longer than 20 to 25 minutes. They told me the door latch was broken and parts had to be ordered. As if that wasn't bad enough , I was given a bill for $124 . I asked what in the hell for? The service attendant said "well we had to hook a computer up to it and do a diagnostic check". Just to tell me my door latch is physically broken.? I am thoroughly PO'd at Ford and this dealership. Especially since I have purchased 5 vehicles from them in the past 12 years and that they have to charge $124 for a computer diagnostic check that took ten minutes. I am waiting now for the Ford dealer to call back with cost for parts and labor to fix our Escape. I would fix it my self if I could get parts . I would like to hear from anyone with similar door problem and what it takes to fix it. .
It is 2017 now My 2014 Ford Escape titanium edition rear driver side door latch won't work.. the Door would swing open because the locking mechanism won't keep the door shut.. This is a recall Problem and ford better Fix this As soon as possible and free of charge. I looked at other sites and I am not the only One with this same problem and it seems Other 2014 ford escape owners had the same thing happen to them too.
This is a long standing issue with Ford. I have a 2005 Ford Focus and there was a recall on my vehicle for faulty latches a number of years ago. The dealer replaced it for free, then a few years ago the latches broke AGAIN on BOTH of my rear doors. I called a local Ford dealership to let them know there replacement for the recall was a failure and they said they would not fix it since my car was already "fixed" under the recall. I was very disappointed in Ford's response. I'm in the market for a new car now and, needless to say, I will NOT be getting a Ford.
Oh, great. Just got home from grocery store (11-16-17) and my driver-side front door WON’T LATCH CLOSED!!!? After reading through the previous postings from other Ford owners, it’s obvious I’m not the only one with this problem!! Even for a simple recall issue, my Ford Escape has spent SEVERAL days, each time, at the nearest Ford dealership.

The same here. Ford Escape2014 the driver's door wont latch closed as I slam it. I really regret buying it. This Ford tramsmission keeps clicking often when I increase or drcrease speed. The trunk wont cpmpletely close and Ajar indicator often on. The trunk handle soon brook only aftet two months of using it. Moreover, the screen disply wont turn on, and it has started making wobling noise ehen ACU is turned on. I found it inconvinient all together. I have learned a great lesson. NO Ford in my life anymore.
Here we go! Just got home and opened the driver side back door to get out some bags. Now the door won't latch when I try to shut it! I see there is a recall concerning door latches so I guess I will call the dealership and see when I can come in to have it repaired. By the way, it is a 2013 Ford Escape Titanium Edition w/ Ecoboost.

Well, now it's my turn. Today after lunch we were heading back to work and the guy in the backseat couldn't get the door to stay shut. Same thing as you guys, I can move the latch up and down with a screwdriver but it won't stay like the other door. Over 390,000 Fords have been recalled for this. I called my local dealer here in Billings and they were to call me back. That was three hours ago. I called again and left a message. Typical for these clowns with recall issues. Not my first experience with them.
Lucky you! Only 3 hours? I've been waiting for over 2 weeks for a callback and that is after talking to an agent, sending an email, and after an online chat!
Is it a recall item on 2013 or not? What does the part cost if I have to do it myself? What did it cost to have Ford do it? Anyone???
See Ford recall 16S30 and NHTSA Recall Number 16V643
Unbelievable! Was vacuuming the back seat (2010 f 150 crew c), and now that back driver side door wont close. Lithium grease the latch to the point where I can move latch up n down w my finger. Door just won't close though. I removed actuator and ordered a new one, now I'm thinking I messed up as the actuator may not be the problem. Still don't know exactly why the latch won't close when door is shut?
My turn I guess. I'm having the same issue with my 2002 ford escap . I could not open my rear passenger door from the outside so i reached around and opened it from the inside. Now I can't get it to close and latch my tailgate door will not open also. So done with fords!
I have this same issue with my 2014 Ford Fusion. My car's VIN is not part of the recall for this issue. I actually filed a complaint with Ford Motor Company and NHSTA and they are reimbursing me the cost of the repair for the door latch - haven't seen the $$ yet. But, I can't get them to replace the other door latches. I no longer have that (false) sense of security that the other doors are safe. They could just pop open at any time. Ford needs to step up and fix these door latches. Where did they find these plastic parts anyway - recycled water bottles???? DO NOT think your other doors won't break - they could. Make some demands of Ford people. Get your cars fixed. Be safe!!
Well now it my girlfriends car wont latch. It don't click in and the handle don't release it. I'm worried about this...well she may not be strong enough to shut the door when she out. Have to slam the door viciously to get it to click but if I roll down my window and shut the door to be closed. But in latched. The handle don't click just releases and when doing this it should latch back. Since no forward motion is pressed to open the door. . But it don't it stay open and have to slam the door shut again. It's a ford focus 2012. Bought out right off the car lot. Same car lot wow don't change the lady's oil sticker and passed the incorrect amount of hours on her pay checks to get here approved for 2018 car that now wont take back.
Until you can get the vehicle in to Ford for the free repair....it's a recall items for all 4 doors....use a bungee cord to hold the door from flying completely open when going around a corner. Mine was repaired free last month nth...a 2013 Escape.

Guess I'm joining the party now. This cold winter morning after I sat my 3 yr old in the back seat, boom, the door wouldn't close. After 30 minutes of trying to lift up the latch I had to tie the door close with rope just so I could get my 3 yr old to school and my ass to work.
And another bites the dust! Apparently ford isn't learning a lesson. I have a 2016 f150 sport.... my son's door will not latch. I've only ever had problems with Ford's O2 sensors which is why I stuck with them because in comparison, it was the best truck for my family. Now this happens right away the holiday season. Lovely :(

My wife calls the 08 Expedition "Christine" We've replaced both front window motors that broke after a freezing rain $450 each. The AC had no water run off tube so the condensation drained on the BCM (Body Control Module= Computer) and fried it! This also rusted out the rocker panels and floor boards under the passenger seat. Now the door latches get stuck in the open position when the temperature drops below 32 degrees- even more fun when it happens on the highway.... Transmission was stuck in Limp mode - $1,500 wiring harness. At 100k when replacing the spark plugs they snapped in the heads -Know ford design flaw on the 5.4 dealer charged $1,200 to extract plugs. I can see a new Honda in my future....

My 2010 Ford Fusion did the same thing out of the blue a few months ago. We gave up and duct taped it shut. A few weeks ago I changed the duct tape (new season and all, gotta be fashionable) and it wasnt sticking as well, the door ajar light would stay on as well as the dome light for like 5 minutes. Well, not 10 minutes ago I decided to RIP off the tape and do it again. I looked at the latch again, but this time it was down. O_o. So, I flipped it up, shut the door and Wah-Lah! The door shuts, latches, and remains closed again!!!!!! I turned the child lock latch on and will never open that door AGAIN! Sheesh! Thanks FORD (sarcasm).
2013 Ford Fusion-same thing today. Back rear passenger door will shut but not latch, The latch seems fine, you can moved the inside up and down. The piece it latches to inside the car seems fine. I called Ford about the recall he says mine isn't on there but i kinda find that hard to believe. Now i'm not sure what needs to be fixed or where to take it without it costing big $$$!
Mine just did this a couple of hours ago so I called ford found out it was a recall and since july 4th is a few weeks ago they won't even get to it until July 10th. I had to use a tie down between the rear doors and hopes it holds until Ford can fix it. I'm waiting on a call from another dealer to see if they can work me in next week. And if you ask why I haven't done this since then. The dealer doesn't ever want to service recalls so this was the nail in the coffin I don't know what happened to Ford but I won't buy one again.
I called Ford and they said my car was covered, gave VIN info etc So I am clueless
I cannot close back door the same thing, when I try to close door just doesnt want to shut m. Do not know that to do. please help and if someone knows Ford number let me know
Welp add ours to the list. Ford escape. Got back from the hospital this morning for high blood pressure and was heading back out this evening for yet another hospital visit for high blood pressure and suddenly the door wont shut. We didnt even use that door today. Talk about a way to raise blood pressure even more. Ha...
Well this is not a club I wanna be in buti guess I am. My passenger back door wont latch or close and I'm sitting in a parking lot at the Braves game while my family is inside enjoying the game. This sucks.
My kids just got back from the grocery store and came and told me the rear passenger door won’t close. It springs open. The latches move it won’t catch. Lovely.
My 2012 Ford Fiesta se did it 2 months ago at the store with my friend in the passenger seat. Her door almost flew open. She didnt notice until we were home and she went to shut it. I realized the aculator is not doing the click latch on the little thingys sides that locks it. I replaced it with a new acculator at the auto part store for about $130 and replaced it myself. You have to take the door panel off, as well as removed the entire glass windows to get to the mechanism to replace it. That fixed it. So the actuator its self malfunctions on the inside over time. You have to replace it the entire part. Then one month to the day the passenger back door wouldn't close leaving the store. Children sit in those seats. I'm furious and don't know what to do. Calling some federal agencies soon. Also if you cant close it. Make sure that the thing that you move that gets struck is down and not latched up. Put it so its as if the car door was open currently. Then as hard as you can. As steady as you can so the door doesn't hit wrong and the striker damage, but anyways You just slam that door as hard and mighty as you can, over and over and it will eventually latch its self and it only opens if you open it and then you get in the same position all over again and have to slam slam slam to make the broken latch latch. But trust if you slam it hard over and over and not let the thing that moves get in a wrong poisition and it will latch after anywhere from 1 to 30 times. Eventually it just wont latch anymore if you have to keep doing it. This is a real temp fix and it does work. REMEMBER, SLAM THE DOOR VERY HARD OVER AND OVER TO GET TO LATCH IF LATCH IS NOT LATCHING, Not the latch is stuck up. It has to be in normal position during hard slam to get latch to do what you need till you can to get the dealer. What ever you do Don't let children sit in a seat with a broken door and always make sure they know never to remove the seat belt. Which kids will take them off we all know how children can be. So that is a point we all should let Ford know is that they are going to get someone killed. This is no joke to me. I hope this helps save lives somehow!!!

All I can say is after three generations of Ford owners this trend has become the norm for them. They care more about their bottom line and not their customers. We've had more than 20 Fords in our immediate family and we've moved to Honda and Toyota (My dad worked on the Ford F100 production line and now owns a Honda) . The doors on the Expedition will randomly unlock while driving, the windows will open and close. The dealer replaced the wiring harness once at my cost $$$$ and now they said it's the BCM (Body Control Module) but they wont guarantee it will fix it. Wake up FORD! you have lost all consumer Confidence and you're putting lives at risk. Henry is rolling over in his grave!
I pulled the latch that opened the door from inside the card and click-a-di-clack it's fixed. Everyone should try this. If it doesn't work, try locking the door first and pulled the latch with the door locked. Enjoy.

This problem has been happening to me a few times a year for the past 3 years with my drivers door. I am able to fix to fix it every time. 1 pull the door handle a few times. 2. Repeatedly lock and unlock the doors with the door locks on the car door and not the fob. 3. Today was the only time neither worked and I closed the door and slowly forced the lock with the key in the door and it worked. Looks like I should check into a recall and get it fixed for good.

I have a 2011 Ford Escape XLT. I have the opposite issue. My rear passenger door on the drivers side wont open. I have unlocked it and tried to open it.No luck. I finally pulled off the inner door panel as far as I could because some engineer in their infinite wisdom buried screws inside the door well where you cannot access them with the door closed. Then I pulled on the cable to try to open the door-no luck. So I reached inside the door well and tried to release the door latch mechanism by pushing down on the latch-no luck. I can take the latch out and replace whatever is broken if I can get the door open. Any hints from anyone? By the way another example of PPE (piss poor engineering).

The doors not latching on a 2013 Escape were a recall from the factory. Take it to a dealer and they will replace all four latches for no charge.
