Transmission

Asked by Donald Jul 07, 2018 at 01:26 PM about the 2002 Dodge Intrepid SE FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My wife's 02 intrepid shows the transmission is in
first gear, but the shfter is in park, and shifter
moves freely from park, reverse, neutral, and drive.
The car also won't start, believe that to be ignition
switch. Could this be the linkage, if not any
suggestions?

The car not starting could also be caused by the neutral safety switch, due to the problems with the shifter. I would sort out the shifter cable, check tranny range switch, shift interlock relay/solenoid, as well as all fuses. (The neutral safety switch is a safety feature designed to prevent a car from starting when in gear).

It ended up being the linkage had came loose, replaced it and works fine. Thanks for your help
