Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2103 Sorento shut off while driving. There was some smoke from
somewhere...it won't restart. No clicking, nothing at all. Still have lights, etc. Is
this a starter issue or alternator or something else? It's the wife"s car and she is
freaking out

I had similar happen - I didn't see smoke - but I was driving on the freeway 70MPH in my 2012 Sorento I had owned for 101 days. at 70MPH i went to accelerate and nothing happened when I pushed the pedal. Looked at the dash and all my dash indicators were lit. I was able to safely make it to the shoulder. Luckily where I was, Courtesy Patrol saw me and pulled over to check on me because I forgot my phone that day. I had my car towed to dealership and I had blew the engine - but it wasn't "MY" fault - there is a recall on some motors associated with various years and models. Mine was from the recall so they replaced my engine with a factory refurbished engine at no cost to me. Maybe wouldn't hurt to have it towed to a dealership or do a VIN check for recalls? Good Luck!!!

Update on 2013 Kia Sorento. I took out old starter, which was fried, and replaced it. The new one subsequently fried as well upon trying to start it. Took it to my mechanic where he determined engine was seized. Towed it to dealer and they are replacing it FREE of charge!! If any of you have 2011-2013 Kia, check the recalls and get the work done asap

This sounds exactly like what happened to my Niece's 2012 Sorento a couple nights ago. She looked and it said there are no recalls. Could you tell me what the recall was?

I first looked online to find out what recalls there are. There are 3 on the 2011-2013 Kia's. I called Kia and explained what happened. They will need VIN to see if your niece's vehicle is affected. If it is, call the dealer. I only called Kia in case the dealer gave me a hassle, but they didn't. Good luck!
