Why is the check engine light on?

Take it to a local auto parts store and have the fault codes read. Many parts stores do this for free. Post the fault codes here and someone will try to help you figure out the cause.

Goto your closest Discount Auto or Auto Zone and have them run a scan on your car, most Auto Parts Stores scan it for Free!!!

way to go, autozone will put a scanner on it for free than you'll @ least have a place too start good luck
