2013 HYUNDAI SONATA Brake Lights

Asked by Shawn Apr 29, 2018 at 03:32 PM about the 2013 Hyundai Sonata GLS FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When the lights are turned off, both brake lights work
appropriately. When the lights are turned on (in the auto
position) the driver side brake light doesn't illuminate (the
passenger side does).  I've changed bulbs (unnecessarily, I
think) but the problem still exists. I'm at a loss.

I have the same exact problem but it will be both sides and the left side can go totally out and I’ll have to wiggle the socket or wires

I changed the bulbs and it works fine now. I do need a new socket on one side but I Mickey moused it on the left side so it would work correctly. I believe you can tell on the socket if you need a new one by the way it looks on there inside mine was all black with slight corrosion. Also on the sonata for these years theres the side mini bulb brake lights and the regular brake lights that will turn on when you put your lights on. There's two filaments on each side of each bulb. So it may appear to work when you have your lights on but won't get much brighter if at all when you stop. I had to take the brake light switch stopping mechanism off (just looks like a button under there brake light switch) and ot it back on before I figured it all out(I was doing it bymyselfso I had no one to put there foot on the brake. But I'd say to make sure your replacing the same bulbs as the ones you put your lights on and if that doesn't work or before you go and buy ther bulbs if your sockets are looking black or corroded then get the sockets. I had only a slight problem with one socket which is why I was just able to just Mickey mouse it ie. I had to tape the wiring to the socket in a certain spot.
