Hyundai Sonata 2013 Engine Replacement

Asked by Guru9Y9SR5 Jan 23, 2021 at 10:28 PM about the 2013 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T Limited FWD

Question type: General

Hi
We have a 2013
Sonata. That last
week developed
engine problems.  The
car started knocking,
hesitated alot, white
smoke & very
decreased
acceleration. We
barely got it to
Dealership. But did.
They looked at car.
But arent sure if it is
the recall problem.
They want us to pay
1,100, to tear engine
apart to see if it's the
recall problem. We
see on all these blogs
about exact same
issues, that they had
no problem getting a
new engine. Did
anyone else have to
pay that money first
before they were
awarded a new
engine? The one
mechanic is
speculating its 1
piston. And says it
isnt covered. The car
has 85,000 miles. I
had the knock sensor
put on 2019, per
recall. And Hyundai
sent me Warranty.
Has anyone also filed
the Class Action
Lawsuit? Thank you in
advance!

If ur the original owner, it should be under manufacturer warranty. It's 10 years or 100k miles and ur still within on both.

I had the same problem, engine knocking, eating oil like crazy although no smoke. I had the knock sensor test done at the dealership and they told me that passed. I took it in to Pep Boys (my usual place) he told me there was a recall for the engine. He called the dealer to get it towed to the, he said not safe to drive and the eingine was bone dry, only 2 weeks after oil change. The dealer said oil was just because I had high miles 120,000.00. They did say the noise I was hearing was the alternator!? I've had alternators go bad and never had the noise problem, just the no power problem. I got the new alternator unfortunately. About a year later, after putting oil in my car every other week in between oil changes, the car died on the way home. Horrible noise, clunking, grinding sound. Towed back to the same dealer, they said I was really lucky because Hyundai was giving me a new engine! Which they should have done around a year after I started complaining about the noises and oil issue. There is an active class action lawsuit now. Go to: HyundaiThetaEngineSettlement.com. The case is Hyundai and Kia Engine Litigation, No 8:17-cv-00838-JLS-JDE and Flaherty v. Hyundai Motor Company, et al., No 18-cv-02223 (C.D. Cal.).There is a deadline for filing.
