should there be a piece that fits in the square cut out on the inside of the lift back a little ways above the locking mechanism

I found your question so curious that I went out to look at my 2010 Outback. I discovered a small square with a plastic insert and have no idea what it's function is. I can only guess that it's some sort of access panel. What do you see in your car? The square area is about 2 -3 inches square, correct? You could check with the dealer? Did you purchase the car new? On another subject, is your car burning excessive oil?
It would be helpful to add a photo.
I have one on my 2001 Subaru Outback and it is an access panel for your locking system I had to take mine out and clean it and this made it very easy
We bought the car used an it is missing the piece that covers the access hole. As far as burning oil goes, the salesman said, and I quote "these cars do not burn oil, but they use oil, so check the oil each time you fill up with gas". Not sure what the difference is between burning & using oil, but he felt that there was a major distinction.
Mine also smells like burning oil I replaced the cam shaft seals and the timing belt and valve cover gasgets but it still smell like burning oil I also change the oil pressure switch and that seems to help a little My car has 270000 miles on it and am not sure if the head gaskets have benn replaced before i got it
