I have an 89 Toyota Corolla SR5 wagon 1.6L engine. What amps should a alternator be for this auto? I had the alternator replaced and the mechanic said it was a lower amp than should be but it would be okay to run .He could not find the right one at any place in the US--this does not sound right to me. Does this sound safe to use? Thank you for your help.

Yes it should be ok. If you notice the head lights being dim or battery not staying charged then I would check into it. But if you not running some huge radio or other acc.(bigger than stock) you will be just fine.
