Lights flickering and odometer going crazy

Asked by Jasminemarie801 Jul 09, 2018 at 11:35 AM about the 2013 Dodge Avenger SE FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So my headlights, dash lights, and dome lights flickering
light going dim then going back to normal. And then the
odometer started going crazy like going to zero then back
up to speed really fast. Then the abs light, the brake light
and the little swervey car light flicker on quickly then go
off. Went to start my car one day and it was
dead...jumped it and it wouldn't hold a charge to even
drive it. Got it tested at auto zone and it said bad battery
so I got a new battery and everything was fine. Two days
later the flickering of all the lights are happening again but
now so is the engine light?? I read online it could just be
corrosion and I'm praying that's what it is and not my
alternator. Any insight?

Something similar is happening to me. I have a 2012 Dodge Avenger and it started with the battery light coming on and then one by one next time I drove it all the other warning lights came on. Now on this same day my car won’t start. I drove through a bit of water in the road to get home the other day; it wasn’t very deep it went up to about half my tires maybe a bit more but it wasn’t avoidable either. I am changing my battery tomorrow I really hope that works and is not corroded like you are thinking of yours. It was not a smart idea for dodge to put the battery under everything to where you have to take the tire off to even get to it.

I am having similar issues with my 2013 Avenger. It started last year with dimming lights, odometer freaking out, and the horrible ding sound every few seconds. It went away for several months, then came back. Eventually the battery wouldn’t hold a charge, and the car wouldn’t start or stay running if I got it jumped. I had the battery and alternator checked and changed. It worked ok for a few weeks, at least allowing me to get back and forth. It definitely seems to be some type of electrical issue. I had to have it towed. Now, it’s having trouble getting into gear after I am idling at a stop light. Any ideas out there, or else I might have to take it to the dealer.

My 2012 Dodge Avenger had been having the same issue. Now, the dashboard lights go almost completely dim if I turn on my headlights. It ties.in with my speakers almost never working for the radio but plays CDs just fine. Sometimes and suddenly the radio will blare out of the blue for about 10 minutes, then stop for months. The power issues to the car starting was I needed a new alternator. That solved that problem.

It IS the alternator, but don’t replace it with a cheap refurbished one (I made that mistake). Spend a few extra bucks to get a good one.

I have a 2014 Dodge Avenger and mine started right after I replaced my alternator and two days after I replaced it said my battery was bad so I bought a new and now all my stuff is going crazy!! It runs though just can't deal with all my stuff going crazy and not know how fast or slow I'm going at times. Any other suggestions? I'm about done and ready to trade it in or sell it.

My 2013 avenger has done the same and I look to dealership and found out there is a recall on knock sensor. I’m praying this is what it is and I pray I won’t be out of pocket for it

So what was causing all your issues. My 2012 Avenger has all the issues described plus some. It's not the alternator or the battery as I just replaced both. I just wondered if anyone ever found out what caused all this havoc.

I am completely stress over these issues and nobody can even give a clue what to do to fix the problem!

I have a 2012 avenger too and just started having this issue with speedometer and radio. I had the battery replaced twice in 2 years and the alternator 2 years ago. Was told 3 days ago it was the alternator again. Last night a friend said their sons 2013 avenger had the horn randomly going off and the problem ended up being a bad TiPM. I will be calling repair shops this week for diagnostics and quotes. Unfortunately the repair shop 3 days ago cleared the codes.
