Not exactly sure what the ES stands for specifically but I do know that he ES was the best of the trims offered by Dodge in the Intrepid.

Here are all the trim levels for the 1998-2004 Intrepid: Trims 1998-1999 - base 2000-2004 - SE* 1998-2004 - ES ^ 2000-2002 - R/T 2003-2004 - SXT** * In 2000 the base Intrepid was renamed Intrepid SE **In 2003 the R/T (Which had the HO 3.5 V6) was replaced by the SXT, which was basically an R/T with every option but the HO Engine stripped. You could add any option you wanted to the SXT. It's base price became lower than the ES. ^The ES came originally came with just the 3.2 but the 2.7 was included in 2000, leaving the 3.2 as an option. Both were replaced by the 3.5L (Non High output) in 2002 for the ES.

As for the meaning of "ES" it's just a generic designation for the upper scale Intrepid. Dodge doesn't use it anymore but for the most part it was replaced by the "SXT." Dodges now come in SE, SXT, and R/T levels. The Intrepid ES used a softer luxury tuned suspension (the SXT's was sport tuned and more rough). Different ES models have come optioned differently. Mine has Leather, Premium Sound, a 4-Disc CD Changer w/ Cassette+Radio, dual power seats, but no ABS...which is ridiculous for a car of that size. Also the ES, R/T, and SXT models have a front end that differ from the Base/SE which contain fog lights. I remember reading somewhere that the SXT was just an option stripped ES with a the more powerful 3.5 and came with a standard spoiler. You could add all the options you wanted to make it just like the ES. Although SXT is used a bit differently now, the SXT was basically a sport package for the ES.

I was told by an insurance agent that it meant European style.
