The check gages light comes on when i step on the breaks

Check your battery voltage and your alternator output. When you step on the brakes, your foot is off the gas and the brake lights turn on. That drops the voltage and causes one or more of your gauges to go out of range and light the "Check Gauges" warning.

sounds like a grounding/deficient current flow...wash and wirebrush the connections from the battery to chassis and chassis to engine!
