Oil pressure maxed out at start-up and idle and then drops during revving and acceleration

Asked by Kraft_punk Mar 27, 2018 at 12:44 PM about the 2013 Dodge Durango Crew AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've got a 2013 Durango that I've had nothing but problems with.  This a
couple days before I had to get emissions testing done I get a check engine
light so I look through all the vehicle details on the console.  My oil pressure
stays at 96PSI at start-up and while idling and then drops to 40-50 when
accelerating at 3000RPM.  As soon as it's holding speed or back to idling it
goes back to exactly 96PSI every time.

From my understanding the oil pressure sending unit is a pain in the butt to get
to and when I talked to the dealership they said it is either the sending unit or a
problem with the computer.

I use Royal Purple and keep up with oil changes so the oil and oil level is
perfect and there isn't any leaking.

Does anyone have experience with these symptoms?

My neighbor's 2012 Durango had similar problem, the dealer replaced the pressure sending unit and that fixed it. Lucky for him it just 2 months shy of warranty expiration. You may have a problem with the computer, but I would go with replacing the sending unit first.

Thanks for the help. I'm hoping that it's the sending unit and not the TIPM. I've got almost $5K out of my pocket for mechanical repairs, not including oil changes and tires, on it and it's only got 80K miles. The pain is I need to get the emissions tested and it'll fail with the check engine light on. Might be time to trade it in and go with something else!

I see what you mean. Lots of money for mechanical repairs. My neighbor has been having same problem with his Durango, seems that some are not too good. He is planning to trade in June to a Ford F-150 4X4. Hope you can pass emission test and not have to put more money into the truck.
