Antique car Vin numbers
Asked by Lewgabel May 20, 2018 at 10:59 AM about the 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe RWD
Question type: General
I need to look up a car report for a 1965
mustang. Problem I'm having is, when I put
the 11 character Vin number in, it says I
need 17 characters. How do I find the report
for this car with 11 character Vin number?
Thanks

I have a 1957 Ford Fairlane and have never been able to find a car report, like Carfax, for the vehicle, it was not around then and not now. If you are planning on purchasing this classic, or any classic, you need to have good knowledge of the vehicle, what engines were available; by type, number, factory and dealer installed options and other information to be able to asses if the price is fair. As far as the mechanics go, if you don't know much about the car, have some one with real expertise to check it for you. And, I make it a point never to purchase a vehicle unless I am able to see it, test it and check it myself. I am not trying to lecture you, it is just that I have seen people sink money into classics that are not worth a dime.
None of the online VIN lookups are going to work for something of your vintage. Try a local Mustang club or the national Mustang club, they have VIN registries and your car may already be in it.
Look up Mustang Attitude dot Com. You can also get a Marti report on your Mustang.
Or look up the site One Man and His Mustang.
Marti Reports only start for 1967 and up, unfortunately.

Let me have your vin# and I'll see what I can do....
The NHTSA standardized the assignment of VINs to be a combination of 17 characters (numbers and letters) beginning with the production of vehicles model year 1981 and newer. Websites like VinCheck.info (https://vincheck.info/) provide free vehicle history reports but only for any vehicles with a 17-digit VIN. Without the VIN, you can do a free license plate lookup but it only covers any vehicle with a 17-digit VIN.
Your car DOES NOT have a VIN number. VIN numbers were not used in the Ford Mustang until 1981 when they were made mandatory by law. Your car has a data plate which contains a warranty number. So far I have found no way to find a car report with this information. I own a 1966 Mustang and in my search to find previous owners I found this out. You however can look up the license plate which might tell you any previous owners. Also a fun fact is that the ‘65 Mustang shared most of its parts with the Ford Falcon. So if you are in need of parts you cannot find for your mustang you may be able to find them by searching for Falcon parts.
trying to decode if 65 fastback vin is real or fake, seller said title is on the way, suspicious as m not sure how many were made , new vin plates on door lock and under hood, unable to find on frame , maybe looking in the wrong place? thanks guys!
