Is my tranny going? (1998)

Asked by Jessie Aug 19, 2016 at 07:48 PM about the 1998 Dodge Neon Highline Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So my car will hard shift randomly. I haven't noticed a pattern with it anyways.
When I let off the gas before and let it cruise, the car felt like it was...
shuddering or skipping or something. Now however, when I take my foot off of
the gas, sometimes you can feel the car down shift (it always startles me
because i don't expect my car to slow down so drastically when i'm not
braking). Then sometimes when i'm accelerating you can hear that it needs to
shift and it won't or it will shift and jerk the car. When i first start it up, the gas
pedal is stuck, I have to wait awhile and try pushing down very hard to get it
unstuck and sometimes during the drive it gets restuck, and then it cuts
through like butter. Goes straight to the floor without any effort (of coarse then
the car itself is putting in a lot of effort, but accel. is very slow). My tranny fluid
is still a nice pink, though i don't know the last time it was changed. I've had it
for two years now but I don't drive it much. I know I should have checked
sooner but I'm only just learning about working on cars. I was surprised the
fluid looked like it was in good condition. What can i try to do to save my
baby? If i worked on the fluid would i need to change it or flush it? Thank you

My car has overheated many times. I had to replace the water pump, then the gasket pinched so i had to do it again, my radiator was rusted out so i replaced that, and then a year later there was a leak in it so i recently just replaced that too. As soon as i started it up from replacing the radiator and thermostat this most recent time the gas pedal felt extremely hard to push down and the hard shifting started happening very frequently. I haven't been driving it since
