Driver's side brake light out

Asked by Boater19 Jan 13, 2019 at 12:39 PM about the 1998 Dodge Stratus Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Tail light working, brake light isn't. Dual filament 3057 bulb was fine. Have voltage to the plug connector. Don't see any breaks in the lousy simulated plastic circuit board. Turned bulb socket to the lock position and nothing, although the side marker which is down stream is working. Process of elimination says it's the bulb socket. I have continuity from contact pins on socket ring to bulb contacts. 40 years of electrical experience and I'm stumped. Passenger side all bulbs are fine and light.

I don't mind talking to you, but, it seems you're ahead of me. Did you try a bulb from the other side, one that you know works? I thought about doing an ohms test on the stop lamp filaments, bulb in question. If continuity, sounds good. I thought about taking bulb out and using jumper wires from the battery, for voltage and ground, stop lamp filament, to see if stop lamp will work. Can you check voltage and ground in the socket for stop lamps? I can't see anything from here? good luck

Thanks so much for your answer. put external 12v to socket, circuitry is fine since bulb lit up both on the stop and tail filaments.. I don't want to impose, but if you think of anything, please call me at 717-575-9656.

Mark, I got exactly same symptom as you described on my 2000 grand caravan. I wonder did you finally find out what is the problem. If so, what it was? Thanks.
