Volvo oil consumption

That is indeed abnormal and requires investigation. First, let me state I have no Volvo experience. However, I do not think your problem only applies to Volvo cars. If it does not show any obvious drips underneath the car, then it is either mixing with your coolant or exiting through your exhaust. Its not likely it is entering the cooling system (usually you find the coolant leaks to the oil system and is found as "milky" oil). If it is leaving via your exhaust, you typically will observe blue/gry smoke from the tailpipe or oily deposits on the end of the exhaust pipe.

It's likely the pistons and rings, which there has been much talk about on forums. I've had the same issue sine 40,000 on my 2015 V60. I brought it in over and over and heard "everything is fine". Not until I went in YESTERDAY armed with the knowledge of of this KNOWN problem by Volvo, did they finally repair it. I'm just out of warranty, but they are doing it under warranty since there is a paper trail of all the times I've gone in. However, they did call me to try and get $200 for other repairs - of which I'm going to call back this morning and tell them how petty they are and to just do the repairs! This is why there is a class action against Volvo - nobody wants to just do the right thing!!

We have had the same problem. Do you have information about the class action lawsuit? You are lucky they are paying for it. They will pay half of $4400 to put new rings in our Volvo. They will not commit to any amount if the pistons need replacing.

I have this same problem, just talked to Volvo and they aren't going to help in any way. What is the class action lawsuit you reference?

I have the same issue on my 2014 s60 excessive oil consumption started at about 75000 miles Dealership kept telling they saw no problems. Then there were two lines that run to a small silver box on the front grill area on my car which started leaking what looked to me like oil. Dealership finally replaced the. Piston and rings at 95000 miles just before the cpo warranty expires. Car still isn’t fixed though they claim they didn’t see any leaks which is a complete lie .... those lines were clearly leaking something.

I also had a milky grey substance in my oil.

I only put 6000 miles on my Volvo S60 T5 and had to add 3 quarts Phone call to Volvo Service tomorrow

Yes this is a known issue with Volvo cars. Basically the wiper rings do not have enough tension to properly pull the oil back into the engine. Compression will be fine in the engine when tested. Volvo will make you have an oil consumption test. Take it in and bring it back to see how much oil it is using. Please be present and note how much oil is used. Brown Daub Volvo tried to pull a fast one and fill the oil from an unmarked bucket......said they didn't have any quarts of oil. Then they said that oil consumption only effected the 2012's, complete fabrication. The scary thing is that Volvo has no low oil warning if your oil gets very low. End of the day they said that compression was fine (of course it was the compression rings are not the issue). Upon my insistence, once they took the engine apart found the engine bearings to be destroyed and replaced the engine. They said it was a factory engine. Whether it was a rebuilt or new I'm not 100% sure. It was from August until November until the entire thing got resolved. So put your dancing shoes on and be prepared to go to the Everything seems OK stealership dance. Beleive me they know this problem exists.

My dancing with dealership has begun. What do you mean fill oil from unmarked bucket? I have to come back to dealership in 1000 miles. What recourse is there if they say my car needs to consume a certain amount in 1000 miles ? I had to add 3 quarts in 6000 miles.

What the dealership said to Kanadakid is EXACTLY what was said to me: "The 2012's had issues but not the 2013's." Good luck Joanne...Volvo is the worst; the absolute worst.

@Philip I have a 2013 but based on google search 2013 also have an issue. Agree VOLVO has POOR customer service!! Let me know if you get any head way with the class action lawsuit.

Oh no-my 2012 XC60 has been burning oil. Had an oil change June 28th and it’s August 19th and I’m almost out of oil. Had oil put in today. (Not at dealership-just an oil change). After having to rage about getting my windshield fixed (inside rain) two years ago, I am not looking forward to this issue.

Okay went into Volvo for 1000 mile check, car took a quart. I asked the head service guy if he thinks Volvo will take care of me, his response you probably need new rings but pistons are okay. Why would he make that statement? Any guesses anyone?

Because they have seen it countless times, but they won't acknowledge they made serious design issues. Our 2013 Volvo S60 is the worst car ever. Good luck.

Philip I agree but why would Volvo replace rings but not pistons? I would think the engine has to be torn apart regardless. Makes no sense!

I took my 2015.5 Volvo S60 (CPO under warranty) in today for the low engine oil light. I had just gotten an oil change 3k miles ago and barely drive now working from home. After two hours, they stated the piston rings would need replacing. I am waiting for a loaner car as they said the repair could take over 2 weeks and they had none left.

Good News for me! After one oil change at dealer and then one recording at 1000 miles, the dealer called me and said they will take care of my oil issue. I am now driving a 2020 Volvo S60 loaner car, going on my second week. So elated to know that my dance was a fast moving one and not a slow frustrating one:)

I am now thinking of walking away from volvo very sad and disappointed, love the car the handling and cornering, but four cars in the last eight years between my husband and I all with the same problem oil consumption at 80,000 . Not spending big money to have this problem. Very disappointed in volvo. What is an oil consumption test is going to tell me. I know what the problem is.

I have owned 2 Volvos in the past 2 years with the oil consumption issue at about 68,000 miles - 82,000 miles. The first Volvo was a 2012 S60. Car was great and I serviced it regularly, however about at about 68,000 miles it began notifying me at about every 200-300 miles driven to refill it with oil. I would purchase a couple gallons of oil and keep it with me to pull over and refill it. I filled it up regularly and checked the oil before driving it daily, although I thought it might just be a glitch that the car was having with the electronics. Shortly after those issues, it was taken to Volvo to be repaired and they claimed it was "misfiring". I was charged $3,000 for them to "fix" it. Within 1 week of it being "repaired" the issue arose again and I returned back to Volvo only to find out that they really didn't fix the real problem of "oil consumption", and that it was a known issue with their vehicles. They attempted to charge me $12,000 to have the engine replaced. I sold the car back to them for $3,000 after many hours of arguing/disagreements. Volvo assured me that the oil consumption issue was rare and "not enough people had it to warrant a recall by Volvo". The 2nd Volvo was a 2013 S60 (a spare one we had purchased about 2 years prior because we loved the 2012 S60 so much). I drove it immediately after my 1st Volvo fail. The car was perfect and serviced regularly as well, until about 82,000 miles when I was driving back to Dallas from visiting family and black smoke started coming out from the hood. I pulled over and the car was completely dead, the "check oil" light came on at that time after dying on me. Not once was there any indication that the car was having issues with the oil/engine until this day. I called a tow and had it sent to the Volvo service department only to find out a few days later that this Volvo experienced the same "oil consumption issue" as my previous one. I am not sure if this is strictly an issue with the 2012/2013 S60 models, however i strongly encourage folks: DO NOT purchase. Save yourself and take your business to another car brand. I hope one day that Volvo recognizes the issue and rectifies it, the way that they and their dealerships/service department handles this known issue is terribly bad business and such a shame. I love the looks and features of their vehicles, so it saddens me to say that I will never be a customer of theirs again and I will do my part to encourage people to steer clear of Volvo cars. I'm afraid there is no class action suit. A very, very expensive lesson learned. No more Volvos.

I am experiencing similar problems with my 2015 V60 which has not yet done 60K kilometres. The problem first started around 50K just before being serviced. The car has consumed approximately 3.5 to 4 litres of oil in under 10K kilometres since then. On the second occasion when the oil light came on, I took it to the Volvo dealer. They confirmed the oil was low (I hate not having dipstick. The electric gauge says "not available" which is another problem) and topped it up then sent me out for 1000 kilometres. When I went back in they again confirmed the oil was low but could not explain why. One possible suggestion was the Thermometer needed to be replaced at a cost of $600! Has anyone heard this before? The car never runs hot so I don't think this is a problem here. The car has been meticulously maintained by the Volvo Dealer first and then a specialist Volvo auto servicing company. It goes in again for a service the end of this week. I will be asking them to look in more detail at possible issues and document the findings. When the problem occurs again (and it will) I will be back to the dealer armed with facts. Its likely to be a "bun fight"! Pretty disappointed as I really like the car but this is just not good enough from Volvo. Any advice here appreciated.

I'm sorry for the issue you are experiencing. I don't have any words of encouragement; the company is worthless. They just can't bring themselves to say, "Our design/product is no good." I cannot wait until I can get rid of my S60; I have a particular make and model (non- volvo) in mind; and, because I can never afford to buy brand new, I am going to look for a Volvo dealership that has what I'm looking for on their pre-owned lot and trading it off to them. If they ask me about the misfire, oil in the spark plug chamber, or loss of oil, I'm going to say, "It's all in your head; all cars consume oil."

2013 Volvo S60 experiencing same oil consumption issue starting at about 70k miles +/-, asked dealership several times and after being told maybe a small leak that just isn’t showing up on the ground they finally told me Volvo is known to have this issue with this model and it’s not worth fixing as it’s basically the cost of a new engine. This enrages me as I cannot afford another car and hardly drive this one, as I work from home. There definitely SHOULD be a class action lawsuit and it appears there would be plenty of participants for it. Hoping an attorney may happen upon this thread and share guidance as to how to go about initiating one. This is beyond wrong and I will NEVER buy Volvo again after this horrible experience.

I am having the same issue. Went to my mechanic 3 times without any fix. He said to take it to the dealer. I am scared to after reading all of the customer service treatment everyone on here has had to deal with. I just finished sending an email to the head of Volvo, Anders Gustafsson. We'll see if I get an answer. I love my car and don't want another brand, but this is not the kind of service you get from a luxury brand - at all. Very disheartening.

Racheal, did you get anywhere? I have a 2015 XC60 with less than 60k miles on it with the same issue. While we were in the middle of the oil consumption test our car broke down on the way home from vacation. Volvo is denying our claim under the warranty (yes, it's still under warranty) even after being told by 2 people in their service department that this was a KNOWN ISSUE and that we were a good candidate for the repair. We ended up having to add a quart of oil before hitting 1000 miles after oil changes. Now I'm being told to either bring the loaner car back or pay $16k to have it repaired aka replace the entire motor and turbo. I've owned 2 Honda's and 2 Toyota's as this is my first Volvo and the FIRST time I've ever had an issue like this. I purchased this Volvo when we found out I was pregnant simply because of their safety rating. If this is not resolved appropriately, I will NEVER buy another Volvo as long as I live. My husband called Volvo Consumer Affairs today to file a complaint. They will follow up with the dealership as well. As for now, the 2021 XC90 loaner is still in my driveway and we are still fighting to get this repaired. The answers we are getting from Volvo are vague and it's very obvious they are trying to weasel their way out of fixing our car.

Mine is a 2012 Volvo S60 T5. When I purchased the car it had 99,489 miles on the odometer and when the vehicle became an issue it was at 104,409 miles on the odometer. I have proof that their weren't any warnings that the engine was low and that the recall repair didnt work. On December 1, 2021 my husband was driving the vehicle on the highway and it stalled without warning after almost crashing into the vehicle in front of him. He was able to pull over, start the car back up and drive it home. There were no warning alerts or check engine light that came on the dashboard. After browsing the internet, we realized that the car had a recall due to an oil consumption level issue in 2014 (Recall #R29436; National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign #13V592000). I contacted Volvo of North America who opened up a case (case #211203-000423) and then had the car towed to Portland Volvo in Scarborough, Maine for an appointment on December 14, 2021. On December 15, 2021 Portland Volvo informed us that the vehicle’s engine was beyond repair. Later that evening I received an email from Jemmy at Volvo of NA stating that they would cover $750 of the repairs. I emailed her back asking her to wait for a quote from Portland Volvo on how much it was going to be to repair the vehicle. On December 16, 2021 I was informed by Portland Volvo that she spoke with the district manager and that a used engine costs between $10- 14,000 and that Volvo of North America has decided not to help because the car is now out of warranty but it was due to a manufacturer's defect. Not only has the car been seen periodically throughout its lifetime at Volvo dealerships but was seen in July 2021 due to two recalls that needed to be fixed at Volvo in Exeter, NH. They did a multi-point inspection on the car and everything passed and only 3,500 miles had been put on the car since. I have been researching this on the internet since this issue occurred and this seems to be an issue with several owners of the 2012 Volvo s60 T5 cars with engine code 62, which mine is. I am sitting here almost in tears. I live in Charlotte, North Carolina and I purchased a 2013 Volvo S60 in April of 2020. Last February I had the timing belt changed and spent $1500 to ensure that my car was running perfectly. One morning I started the car and the engine light came on. I was like ok, I will schedule an appointment. The engine light went off and I was thinking maybe it was a sensor issue but I planned to have it checked out A few days later the check engine light came on again and a message that read "low oil consumption stop engine now". I called someone to come and look at the car and I was told that the car had no oil in it. It was described as being "bone dry". I was like no way, I keep my car serviced. Anyone who knows me knows that my car is my baby so there was no way my car just ran out of oil and beside I have my car serviced regularly. There was not any oil on the engine, in my drive-way nor my parking space at work. I had the car towed and was advised that a rod was thrown in the engine due to no oil being in it. I was thoroughly confused. I had 2 more mechanics look at my car and I was told the same thing, I was like no way! Then I started to google and found out that large oil consumption is a problem that has destroyed many Volvo S60s and that it is a manufacture defect and Volvo is well aware of this defect. At first, I felt a little hopeful after finding this out and hopeful that the company would correct the problem however, now I feel deflated. I only have one car as a single parent. I seriously just want to cry. I talked with someone today who told me there was nothing he could do for me. After I told him about what I found on the internet he said, people can post anything on the internet that they want but that doesn't mean it is true but he isn't saying it couldn't happen. Really?

@Annette I am dealing with the same issue! I feel like I am harrassing them everyday by calling, emailing, tagging them on Twitter and all I keep getting is the same answer "your car is out of warranty" but that does not sit well with me. Ive asked to speak with the person who is making the decision not to help so I can explain that it was a defect and it should be corrected but get told that they cant put me through to them or even give me their names. What is your VIN number? Did Jemmy ever follow up with you after and offer you assistance and then deny it? I have also contacted the Better Business Bureau and made a claim, spoke to them over the phone and they told me that they rate Volvo with an F. That there are multiple complaints online about this. There are tons of forums also. @Annette I posted about nearly the exact same experience a while back (minus the rod) with my 2013 Volvo S60 beginning at about 74k miles +/- and another user @Joann had advised me to contact: Head of Volvo USA, Anders Gustafsson (anders.gustafsson@volvocars.com), I did not try him because the dealership told me this is a known issue and I am pretty much just screwed. I am wondering if you ever tried reaching out to him? I too am a single mother and this is my only vehicle. I purchased it at 34k miles and have had it serviced routinely only by the Volvo dealership. I cannot afford the cost of an entirely new engine and the cars value is not even worth that investment at this point.  I have been adding oil about every 600 - 800 miles and keeping it with me while driving to prevent from seizing the engine, but I should not have to do this for a car that cost me $14,000 after I had put only 40k miles for a total of 74k miles on it.  It is beyond unacceptable for Volvo to treat customers this way! I would love to find out what would be required to bring forward a class action suit for this, it is just maddening!

@Annette I responded to your reply yesterday and it is still pending to show on the site. Im not sure why or if it will even show up now but dont let Volvo think you are giving up. Im sure thats what many people have done and what they are hoping for. They told me that I cant speak to any higher ups and that I will not be getting any further responses but I keep messaging, keep researching someone else to message and harrass them until they fix their mistakes. Its unfair. I have heard of the class action and I messaged and tried to call the number but have yet to hear back. Contact the Better Business Bureau, the DOJ in your state in regards to a claim for consumer products, and the NHTSA. I wonder how if there are so many of us complaining about this that we can get our own class action and make them respond and fix this.

This is infuriating that so many of us have the exact same story and cannot obtain any assistance in holding Volvo accountable for their known defect.

If you were denied assistance for repairs, try reaching out to Volvo Car Corporation. I received an email saying they would respond to me in 3 days after reviewing my information; will update once I get a response.

I just took my 2015.5 Volvo s60 to a garage that specializes in Volvo. They told me that instead of using the Volvo-recommended 0-20 oil, I should use 5-40. They noted that s60s began having oil problems around 80,000 miles and that thought that by switching to the heavier oil now, I might be able to head off the problem. Has anyone else been told this? I'm hesitant to not follow the manufacturer's recommendations, but after reading these experiences, I'm becoming more willing.

A class action lawsuit was opened for 2013-2016 on April 17,2022 in New Jersey! Goggle it!!! I want in on it. This is ridiculous

I purchased a used 2013 S60 T5 last year in November with 95,000 miles. It was clean, looked well taken care of, and was at a major European brand new car dealership. A month after I bought it the low oil warning message came on. I checked the oil, took 2 quarts to get it where it needed to be. I thought it might just be a one time thing but knew I needed to keep an eye on it. I get the oil changed every 3000 miles, and between oil changes I'm still adding more oil than it initially took. I have discovered that on average I'm adding 2 quarts for every 1000 miles driven. I've noticed no leaks, just a lot of soot in the exhaust..so its got to be burning it. That is an excessive amount of oil to burn, and I'm no mechanic but I know it has to be bad for the catalytic converter. Well yesterday it all came to a head, car started shaking real bad at idle, had it tested, and yep...cat issues casing a misfire in 2 cylinders. I realize buying an 8 year old used car with 95000 miles you never know, but I expected so much more from what I thought was a reliable brand. I've been reading up on the oil consumption issue and see that it is pretty widespread. I've even had a dealership service department acknowledge the problem. I'm kicking myself for not researching better before buying instead of after seeing the issue. From what I've seen and heard from others, I'd be very wary considering purchasing a used Volvo.

Hey, sad Volvo 2013 s60 PREVIOUS owner here. I LOVED that car. It was so fun to drive. But indeed, at about $75,000 miles it started lighting up like a christmas tree--engine light, low oil, stop immediately, etc. I read about this oil consumption problem. Conveniently Volvo has changed their diagnostics and you MUST go to the dealer to find out what the problem is. No more Conrad's or the trusted imports mechanic that gives it to you straight. My engine light was FLASHING and they said they couldn't get me in for two weeks. And that was JUST to find out what all was wrong. I knew it would be thousands to repair this. So, I am now the proud owner of a Toyota Camry. I will miss that car. Should have been good for way more than 89,000 miles. Lesson learned.

My 2015 S60 2L D2 started burning oil at 85K. A new engine had been fitted at 17K miles and I ran it in carefully. Mostly used for long distance driving. By 130K miles consumption had increased to 1 litre every 1600 miles and was increasing so fast that I changed the car, informing the buyer of the problem. The Volvo dealer and three engine overhaul shops said the cause would be oil rings. I never had this problem with the 4 previous diesels I owned in 25 years. All had service intervals of 12,000 miles. This S60 was Volvo dealer serviced at the recommended intervals of 18,000 miles. Some engineers recommend oil changes every 6000 miles. I think this may be a significant factor.

My answer to Guru9QTQ7K answered 11 months ago. I have had 6 Volvos over the past 35 years and not one even thought about burning oil (even up to 350,000 mi on one) until this 2015 S60. I have cared for all of them dutifully, taking them to my Volvo dealer. Recently I had the oil changed in the S60 at the Volvo dealer and after a few miles it was burning a quart of oil in tw0 weeks, I kept adding. At the next oil change I took it to another trusted car shop to see if they noticed anything abnormal with the "oil". They didn't and I ask what grade of oil they used. It was 5w40 and they said per the specs. No low oil messages in 4,000 miles. After getting the "Excessive Oil Consumption" letter and reading these horror stories I checked back at my Volvo Dealer paperwork and found they used 0w20 (Almost less than water) for the last two oil changes. Prior to that they used 5w30. Checking the Owner's Manual, "0w20 is recommended for extreme driving conditions" down to -40 deg F, and 5w30 is to be used otherwise. Bottom line, keep an eye on your Volvo Dealer.

I own a 2014 S60 with 68,000 miles. I was towed 4 days ago, "low oil pressure warning" per the shop I had 1.5 qts of oil in my car. I have owned a 2004 S60 in the past with no issues. My small shop states" it's burning somewhere but can't tell where unless you take the engine apart" they advise the oil consumption test, come back in 1000 miles. After reading all of these posts, I want to trade it in.

I own a 2013 S60 T6 and until 100,000 miles it was fine. Now my check oil light comes on every month and I was told the same thing; I am out of warranty and it is an internal oil leak and piston rings repair. The cost of repair is more than the car is worth. This is inexcusable. This car should last 200,000 miles. I am waiting to hear from dealership how they will "help" with bill/repairs. I am so disappointed because I have loved my S60 T6! Is there a current lawsuit about this problem?

Same situation here Guru. My son saved up 12k from working every day after school to buy his first car - a 2013 S60 which he picked based on Volvos reliability reputation. He absolutely loved the car but Less than 1 year later it’s burning oil like crazy and the Volvo dealership basically said you at SOL. Volvo could have had a customer for life but now we will never consider another Volvo.
