Question type: Maintenance & Repair
have a 2016 Volvo xc-60 with 64,000 miles went to Volvo dealer and am in the
beginning of Oil Consumption test. Same dealer performed oil change a few
months ago. got a low oil warning and had to add a quart. Volvo extended
warranty to 8 years, is an oil change and drive 1000 miles to little time to know
if rings are bad?

Most manufactures won’t do anything about oil consumption unless the engine burns a quart in 500 miles. If your engine burns oil like that you will notice a blue tint to the exhaust and it will have a burnt oil smell to it. I think that maybe when the oil was changed last that it was filled properly, but that’s is just me thinking. I guess I’m just too much old school cause I check my oil a minimum of once a week. Sooner if I drive more. And if I ever have my oil changed by any place I always double check the oil level before driving away. Just too many horror stories out there.
If you're losing/using oil excessively the 1,000 miles should let you know. How many miles did you drive the last time before you had to add a quart? Knowing the engine is losing/using oil will be the first step. Finding out exactly why will be the next step. It could be rings, valve guide seals, or maybe a leaking gasket. They'll have to dig deeper once it's determined the engine is using excessive amounts of oil. Another thing, keep all your documentation on this! Volvo isn't going to want to pay for a new engine or a major repair. So this might be a fight! Good luck to you with this! Hope that helps! Jim
I have an appointment Monday for my 2016 Volvo. 100% covered. No deductible and a loaner car for a week. I knew that 10,000 miles between oil changes was going to come back and bite them in the ass.
