Exhaust making a noise

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've recently bought a Fiat 500 and every time I
have passengers in the back the exhaust makes a
scraping sound. I've taken it back to a garage 3
times at first he thought it was the exhaust catching
on the body work and the noise stopped for a while.
I've taken it back again recently because the noise
has come back and he has told me that it's the way
the exhaust is positioned underneath the car, he's
tried lowering the exhaust and putting a wedge in
between but the noise is still there. Is this a
common issue with Fiat 500s?

Scraping sound as in dragging on the pavement? If so you are overloading your tiny little car.

It sounds like it is but when the garage has taken it for a test drive they have told me the exhaust is secure and it's not dragging on the floor

If the exhaust is dragging on the ground there would be obvious wear on the tail pipe. If this is the case you need to not load your car so much or get heavy duty springs for the suspension. Going up one tire size would gain you a tiny bit of additional ground clearance. Maybe you just need a different car ;)

Look in your owners manual - it will tell you the maximum load you can put in your car - I am guessing around 500 to 600 pounds total.

I'm starting to think I do need a different car! I've only had it 3 months and I'm ready to give it back!

And it's making the noise when there is only 1 passenger in the back, if it's just me and a front passenger in the car then it doesn't make a noise

Have the mechanic put it up on a rack to see if the exhaust is loose but I think you have a tiny little car that can't handle a load. If he lowered the exhaust that is probably the problem!!!!!!!!!

Yeah he said everything is fine, he's told me that he thinks the exhaust hasn't got enough room to move when there's people in the back, but he couldn't say that for definite

There you have it. Live with it, don't have passengers or get another car. Have a nice day!

The Fiat is cool- is it the tiny one or the 4 door one- at least the 2 door 500 is cool- that other one is made in Serbia- or somethin' like that- how do you fit passengers in the back of a 500?!

It's a 2 door, granted it can only have 2 passengers in the back, but when I've only got one passenger in the back it's making the noise.

This is an easy fix, looks like it may have had a replacement exhaust fitted. You need to release the front exhaust clamp and tap the front pipe back using a mallet on the middle hanger. This will move the rear silencer away from the rear suspension which is currently catching on it .
