I am considering buying a 1988 Toyota MR2 and I read something about alternate fuel types. I don't know what it was talking about but I was wondering if there is a certain fuel type needed for this car or can I use Unleaded? It has an Automatic transmission.

Some models have compression ratio of 8:1 these will run ok on 87 octane. Other models have a ratio of 10.6:1 these will need 91 or higher octane levels.

Agreed...I had a 1993 MR2 (non-turbo) and regular unleaded is all that's required. However, if you're getting an '88 MR2 Supercharged, I'd suggest using Premium Unleaded.

Also, I'd very strongly recommend going with the 5 speed manual transmission instead of the AT, the car is much more fun to drive and I had a blast with my '93 with the MT. The shifter and clutch are excellent and you can really work that engine!
