I have a 2013 Nissa Maxima, with 70,000 miles. why would the serpentine belt break

Serpentine belts rarely just break. Check to see that the idler and tensioner pulleys move freely. Also check the harmonic balancer to see if it is straight and in one piece.

Turns out the power steering pump was leaking on the belt. I replaced both the pump and the serpentine belt. Now....there is a loud squealing sound for the first few minutes when I start the car. It only happens after the cat has been sitting for a few hours.
