I have the opportunity to buy a Porsche 944, 1986, 42000 everything works except the air conditioner. The asking price is $7000, it has been sitting for a few years, is this a good deal or a disaster in the making. How can I be sure

How many synonyms for disaster? Somebody wants 7 grand for a 944?! Amazing, this forum is just amazing- always good for a laugh!

so, is it the price or the fact it has been sitting for a few years with low mileage?

Where to start? The porsche 944 is a derivative of the 924- I worked at the dealership when they first came out- they were junk brand new! Always coming back for repairs- the 944 was a little better- anyone who has one would love to get rid of it- they don't run for long without demanding another large donation of cash to a mechanic- THAT'S WHY IT WAS SITTING- this guy certainly has a lot of nerve to take his dead junk and try to find a victim who will pay 7 large- look on CraigsList for what $7000 will buy- this car is NOT worth $7000 it's not really worth $2000, straight up

This car will be a MAJOR money pit and you'll likely spend the $7k on repairs in the short term. I used to work with a guy who had an '86 944 and replacing the clutch would've cost him $3-4k, so he dumped it and got a Jeep Wrangler. You're looking at $$ to fix the AC and if it's been sitting for YEARS...Lord knows what else under the hood needs tending to...

Seems very expensive to me. I would offer $3k if the car is very straight and runs. If he wants more, look elsewhere

I see some '86 944's selling for $1,500 on eBay...I still say HELL NO about buying one though. In THIS case, one man's trash will be another man's nightmare.

$7,000 seems a bit steep for that car unless it is in beautiful condition. Actually, the Porsche 944 is not that bad of a car. Some minor repair issues still do not override the fact that this car was voted "Best Handling Car in North America" by Car and Driver magazine. Perfect 50/50 weight balance. The standard 944 was a bit underpowered with its 2.7 liter engine. Later years produced more horsepower with the 944S, 944S2 and the 944 turbo. The 944 turbo is the one to buy if you can find a nice one. As with any Porsche; buy the newest, cleanest, lowest mileage car you can find.

Do y'll still feel the same??? Hahaha . If still for sale, I'll be happy to pay $7K for it.. Funny how time changes things.
