Asked by Billy Dec 03, 2014 at 05:34 PM about the 1986 Porsche 944 STD Hatchback

Question type: Car Customization

Because I feel the four banger is getting a bit slow and I don't want to build the four
cylinder I want to build a cayenne engine they have a lot of power and I have heard it
is a torque engine in the cayenne so i though in my 944 if it fits it would be a blast
obviously I want the petrol engine. If not i might put a 911 engine if this doesn't work
out.Thank you for the help if you are able to give a hand also I am going to also put in
a porsche 911 manual 5 speed gearbox as well and lighten up the interior.

This would be an extremely difficult project. The Cayenne engine would not bolt straight into a 944, you would need to enlarge the engine bay and engineer a lot of custom radiators to cool such a large engine in a much smaller engine bay. You would probably need to move the wheel arches and inner wings then weld in new engine mounts. This however would all be only half the work. You would then need to integrate a modern electrical bus system and all the computers, sensors etc into the old 944 electrics. I do not think you would be capable of this, most places could not do it and they would have to design and create a new engine control system with ignition systems, mapping etc. It would be easier and cheaper to buy a 911 Turbo.

There is people installing ls corvette motors in the 944 so I am sure it would fit with out any fabrication fitting the gearbox and flywheel is questionable for electronics u will need a stand alone computer for the engine not an impossible task around 10000 if u do the work

Why do that at all, you'll end up with a car worth less than before? For that kind of investment you can go and and buy a Porsche 911 (996) that will go better, handle better and still be worth the same when you sell it.

The 3.0 from a 968 300hp cost $5000 with trans mission/ less work

I recently bought an 84 Porsche 944, 5 spd. N/A. Only had 129,xxx miles on it and it does run great, but I have an AMC high performance 360 and I'm really curious to know if it's possible to slap that motor down in there, like how people can easily do an LS1 swap. Please, let me know.
