Question type: Maintenance & Repair

there are 4 lights-2 outer for low beam - all 4 for high beam
low beam doesn't work on left light.
works when high beam chosen.
fuses are good. As a temporary fix i have unplugged the high beam lights
and run normally now with high beam chosen.  (once in a blue moon do i
need to use the high beam but always need the low beams)
so it appears that the low beam light works but just not when chosen for the
low beams

Sounds like its either the switch or the wiring. Have you tired taking the bulbs out and checking the wires for corrosion? stiffness which would indicate a bad wire, Its most likely the switch. If you can find a new switch try that. Any wreckers would possibly have one. a head lamp switch is $5.19 on rockauto brand new. This is a us based website but the best one for vw and audi parts for older modal cars such as your 88
