Scam? 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee license plate LED light - $412?

Asked by GuruXPPPB Nov 11, 2018 at 03:13 PM about the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So .. just failed inspection because one of the two LED license plate lights
was out.

Thinking it would be the usual $1-3 light bulb and 5 minutes to replace,
we were told by the Jeep Dealer that it would be over $400 parts & labor to
replace the license plate light "assembly".

Checking around at MOPAR they are kind of giving the same story.

We can't find the part number for the led itself, and the number shown on the
led housing (89WXP597 rev *N/R* 7VDC) is not coming up.

Is there a way just to replace the bloody bulb?

Have they lost their mind? They gotta be crazy to even say that to you. Any replacement lamp will get you inspected and RockAuto.com shows a dozen replacements, each under $10. (You will have to search by the phrase: "license plate light assembly"). I would try to get the one that's LED so it matches and runs off 7VDC so it doesn't set off some bulb sensor.

Thank you Hornet! https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/jeep,2014,grand+cherokee,3.6l+v6,3298406 ,body,license+plate+bracket,830 When I drill into their site -- I only see the whole assembly (when searching for that phrase). If you get a chance - can you show me a link to any one of the individual lights that you found? Thank you!

I'm not able to post you a link but a search for "license plate assembly" will get you to the right page. I think you have found it. They don't show the individual bulb, just a whole assembly. I would guess the assembly is a sealed unit and replacing just the bulb is not practical. But for $10 you have an all new light.

My LED bulbs have also gone out on my 2014 Grand Cherokee. Were any of you able to find the correct LED module for replacement? All I can find is the harnesses for like $178 that seem to include them.

So I'm also in the same boat. Just got pulled over for my lights and the dealer wants 177 dollars just to buy the lamp. Somewhere else said they're discontinued.

If already gotten 3 tickets and I’m not paying this price for some lights to light up the license plate. Last Jeep I will ever own.

I just came back from the dealer in south/east Pittsburgh. They said one, of my two license plate lights are out, on my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. To replace the one, LED light, was $275.00 I am home here researching way the quote was soo high.

I would wire in an aftermarket light and be done with it.

I went and left 40 bucks in a new Jeep and took them off of a new Jeep. O well the 5 grand Cherokee is my last. Her lost me as a customer after 2 tickets for mine being out which I wasn’t paying 378 for a light to light the license plate up. They fucked up

The Fiat 500 bulbs ($12) do indeed fit the 2014-2015 Grand Cherokee as exact replacements for the ridiculously expensive Jeep LED's. Also, the lights are hooked up in series (like christmas tree lights) so if one's out, they're both out.

The fiat bulbs only work if the harness still works though! My harness has 2 prongs on the left and 1 on the right so now I have to buy a whole new harness!

i bought a set of the fiat replacements and can't get them to work as a pair. if i keep the single working mopar unit in and plug in a fiat one they both work but are very dim. if i plug in the faulty mopar unit and a fiat unit it (the fiat one) works and is bright. i have reversed the plug but that doesn't seem to make a difference. any ideas?

I was told I had to purchase a new harness. I removed the lights and found the socket pins corroded. The pins from the lights were in the plug. I sprayed the plugs heavily with electric contact cleaner. I used a pin and very small screwdriver and was able to remove the pins from the sockets. I ordered the Fiat lights from Amazon for $23.00. They worked. I sprayed the contacts and plug with electrical silicon spray. The Fiat lights I ordered don’t have the same female type sleeve as the OEM. So make sure you check that and make sure you lock the plug in place using the tabs.
