Rumble Seat lid installation

Asked by 28SportCooupe Dec 04, 2021 at 01:47 PM about the 1928 Ford Model A Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am restoring a 1928 Sport Coupe.  The rumble seat lid was not worth
salvaging.  I purchased a reproduction lid but am having trouble with the
fitting of the hinges to the brackets.  My measurement between the body
hinge points is 35".  Mounting the original hinges and the old lid gives me an
out to out dimension on the hinges of 34", leaving approximately
1/2" play on either side of the hinge pivot point and the mounting bracket.
questions is:  What should the out to out dimension be on the installed
hinges on the new lid.    I have read that a replacement lid and original
hinges will not work.  If you have a reproduction lid you need reproduction
hinges.  I need to know what the out to out dimension should be so as to
determine if I need to shim anything.
