2013 Huyndai Sonata Hybrid Limited with 126k milleage, seized motor

Asked by Johanne_2496 Aug 16, 2020 at 04:22 PM about the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited FWD

Question type: General

Has anyone else have problems with their 2013 Huyndai
Sonata Limited  Hybrid?  Apparantly it has a long block and
this particular car is not part ofcthe recall although
fromcreading this post, had similar seized engine
problems after 126,000 miles. My extended warranty
stopped after 100 k, Corporate only want to pay half the
motor (my cost would be $4,250) since it is a more
expensive motor-long bed and they cannot find one so
they claim they will need to put it together piece by piece
and they are only doing it as a coutesy because they do
not have to do anything since I was 26k over the warranty
milleage. So after spending 5 months in Mayo hospital, my
car sat unused during that time, had neighbor take me to
doctors' appointments using my car. First problem, dead
battery. (THE REGULAR BATTERY), had that replaced, on
way to Jacksonville from Ga, got a ding ding, " danger. Do
not drive, hybrid battery failure, pull over"  we were just
about at the doctor so able to park. After appointment,
took car to nearest dealership and gotctge same
message. The car totally lostxall power and stopped in
middle of exit ramp. Waived cars around, waited axfew
minutes and was able to restart and get it to dealership.
Nothing showed on their diagnotic machine. Hadcto pay
for an upgrade download for my car $160.00 and still
nithing showed. Got oil change while there. Made it home,
then a couple of days later, same code message, ding ding,
danger, do not drive , hybrid battery failure, . Called
dealer, xwas scared to drive it since i did not want it to lose
power and stop on the highway. The dealership was nice
and sent a driver with a loaner car for me and he picked up
my car. They had it almost a week, ran tests and said they
replaced the new battery that i had just replaced claiming
it was not the right one. So since teleworking,vi did not
drive my car much but had an appointment 40 mile away
and drove. A few miles down the highway, my AC stopped
blowing cold air. And engine did not feel right, as i exited
the highway, car slowed and started losing all power and
stopped all of a suden after message danger, do not drive
hybrid battery , pull over. I did not even have a chance to
pull over, lost total power, smoke coming off engine this
time. Car would not start back up. I was in the middle of
the road with a bunch if cars beeping at me to get off the
road. Only one good christianv lady stopped ., i put the car
in neutral and she pushed me off the road. Had to get car
towed to nearest dealership. It is still there, i have not
signed the order yet, hate having to pay 4,250 for a seized
engine that is no fault of mine. Always kept up with oil
changes and always used synthetic oil blend ( dealership
oil changes) a couplevof times another dealership but
stillbused synthetic oil blend. Has anyone else with the
hybrid experience this code message and seized engine?

I can't see how the engine is seized, but maybe Hyundai just replacing the engine to see if the conditions go away. Was it just coolant burning that you saw smoke? Maybe it needs a new battery, the Hybrid batteries don't last forever and usually need replacing around this mileage. I would try another garage that works on Hybrids in your area to find the issue and a second opinion. To also put things in perspective, sadly your vehicle is only worth $4600 trade in price and if you sold it today you might get $6300.

Your car sounds like a disaster. It is a 7 year old Hyundai, you may want to dump it rather than spending the money.
