Starter engages in on position

Asked by Mullenwrenchin87 Jul 22, 2017 at 10:10 PM about the 1987 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat Standard Cab 4WD SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Working on my father-in-law's 1987 f-150 with the
5.0. So I put a distributor in the truck and go to fine
tune it and he hits the switch and the starter stays
engaged. He cuts the key off and kills the motor
and the starter stops. He says let me tap the
solenoid while u turn it over. I hit the key and only
make it to the "ON" position and don't even get to
the "START" position and it's cranking. We replaced
the ignition switch on the column and that didn't fix
it. Tried 3 different solenoids that were used but
good. Then we got a new one and no luck. Any
advice?

So we found the problem today. If you put a new distributor or distributor module(outside the housing) on and have the problem we did, then the module is bad.
