Starter will not engage

Asked by GuruPDDQ May 04, 2017 at 10:21 AM about the 1987 Ford F-150 STD Standard Cab 4WD LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

New motor, new flexplate, new starter, new transmission, new starter solenoid, new battery. Truck started good a few times then starter will not engage all the way. Starter is grinding on the ring gear.  OK so we changed the starter three times. Starts a few times then same problem occurs.

I’m having the exact problem now. It seems the starter just can’t reach the flywheel enough. Did y’all find a fix? I’m to the point I want to cut the new starter down where it touches Tran housing to give it another 1/2”. Terrible idea I’m sure but at a loss...for time money and reason

This was a common problem with my 87 F250 6.9 diesel until I got a Mitsubishi starter and it NEVER happened again in the 6 more years I owned it. Now my '97 F150 4.6 does the same thing. Guess I'll try a new starter.
