Asked by KOglesbee Feb 26, 2018 at 09:43 AM about the 1989 Ford F-150 S Standard Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently purchased a 1989 f150 with 4.9l. It had
something continuing to run after ignition was off.
First tried cooling fan for injectors with no luck.
Tried unplugging fuel relay and that stopped it.
Replaced fuel relay and truck seemed ok. I started
it several times and let it idle for about 30 minutes
with no problems. Tried to drive it that night and it
only went about 1/12 miles, sputtered and died. It
has 1/2 tank of gas and I checked the inertia
switch which seems ok. It will now start
occasionally but will not run.Any thoughts?

According to my research there are two. A low pressure pump and sending unit in tank, and a high pressure inline pump under the cab. I am starting by replacing the inline pump and filter. Will post how it goes. Thanks for input.

Replaced external fuel pump and filter and truck does not run. Will run with starting fluid for less than 1 minute and then dies. Next step appears to be replacing the in tank pump. Anyone have any other suggestions?
