1989 ford f150 with ignition issues

Asked by matty3232 Oct 06, 2015 at 04:14 PM about the 1989 Ford F-150 S Standard Cab 4WD LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hey guys.. Just bought a 1989 f150.  New solenoid, alternator, battery is
good.  The truck starts great, when it wants too.  I can go out there at it will
start up just fine, shut it off and come out the next day and nothing.  I will
wait another day and it will fire up.  I have bump started it across the
solenoid and it has worked but then it also hasn't worked at times.  I
thought it might have been the clutch safety switch, so we ran a jumper
wire across that and it seemed to help, but now back to the same thing.
Not really sure where to go next.  Any help would be fantastic

Will the starter spin the engine (crank)? If not, check all the grounds and connections.

When it doesn't start the starter will not crank over. Where does a guy start looking for the grounds? Or is there a certain spot that is more prevalent for the issue?

Follow the large cable connected to the battery (negative ( ---- ) ). It should be connected to the engine or frame of the auto. Make sure the connection is good and not all gunked up with corrosion.
