Truck drives for 5 minutes the surges, chugs and backfires then shuts off

Asked by Brad Jan 30, 2018 at 05:43 PM about the 1989 Ford F-150 S Standard Cab 4WD LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So when I drive my truck for no more then 5 minutes the
engine starts to surge, stutter and backfire then it dies. If I
try to start it the engine will do the same thing. Surge,
chug and backfire and die off.

If I allow it to sit for 2-3 minutes to will start up just like
new and rub like a champ for a couple more minutes then
do the same.

I have replaced both fuel pumps (front and rear), fuel filter,
replaced the fuel and still does the same thing. A friend
said it could be the cat converter but it still does the same
thing. Checked spark plugs and wires and they were all
good and sparking.

I’m at a lose now and can’t figure out what’s going on.
