1988 ford ranger rough idle

Asked by Kevin Nov 07, 2016 at 03:57 PM about the 1988 Ford Ranger STX Extended Cab 4WD SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

OK here I am again, 1988 ford ranger 2.9. I had the transmission rebuilt.
Ever since then it has been idling rough. I have changed the PVC valve,
fuel filter, plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor, coolant temp. sensor.
No other codes except the coolant temp. sensor. It seems to be running ok
but it was not like this before the tranny rebuild. We checked for vacuum
leaks and found none. Please help this one is driving me crazy.

Try resetting the PCM by disconnecting the battery for about 5 minutes. That will wipe all codes or faults and see if it runs better. If it does than you know it is something electrical like a sensor or wire. If it is still the same than it has to be something mechanical like a valve or something. Be sure to check really good for vacuum leaks, the 2.9 is covered in emmisions crap and there are a ton of vacuum hoses hiding.
