No more than you could walk around without your head.
Good point but you might have an ignition control module and your car won't run without it.

My 1984 S15 Jimmy is carbureted, does not have an ECU ! I would think the same about your 1983 S10.
Back in those days it depended on the vehicle and the equipment it had. If you have a "Choke" light on the dash you don't have an ECU (ECM is the proper term). If you have a "Check Engine" light on the dash you have an ECU. My '86 C10 Pick Up, which I bought brand new, had a carburetor, the V6, and automatic transmission. It had a choke light on the dash so it did not have an ECU. Also, some trucks during that time period did not have a catalytic converter either. This caused problems with State Inspections as time went on. The emissions decal under the hood of those vehicles clearly said, in very large print "NON CATALYST". But many so called inspectors weren't aware of this and failed vehicles for "emissions tampering". One such case of this happened to a friend of mine back in the late 90s with his 84 Chevy Pick up. I told him to pop the hood, request a supervisor, and show him the emissions decal when he went back for the second inspection. He did and the truck passed inspection. Jim
