s10 rear axle

Asked by AudiCabriolet Jun 19, 2018 at 12:01 AM about the 1988 Chevrolet S-10 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi I have a 1988 S10 4x4 frame and running gear under my '40 pickup and
the passenger side rear axle outer shaft has a crack running along the
bottom which is letting that nasty gear oil out.  I'd like to replace it but it's
hard to find out what I need to replace it with.  The stamped code on the axle
is HKBC237I or maybe the last digit is a number 1.  I would appreciate any
help you could give me including: the gear ratio, the ring gear diameter or
any other identifying features whih would help me to purchase either a
complete unit or even just the empty axle housing so I can transfer my
shafts, bearings and internals

I would look in local junk yards and on Craig's List. It should not be too hard to find another axle. For the gear ratio you could remove the diff. cover and count teeth or jack up one tire and count the tire revolutions when you turn the drive shaft. 1 turn of the tire and 3 turns of the drive shaft means a 3.0 for example.
