Pontiac firebird warning light

I think it's telling you the choke is on.
I doubt this car has a choke. More like a problem with the throttle body.
Go to my.gm.com, input your vehicle info and you can download a PDF of your owner's manual. You'll find a description of all warning symbols in it. (may need to register an account first to view it.) The symbol in question is "CHOKE", (it's same for all GM vehicles of that era), most likely related to the electric choke or choke heater relay. It may be the electric choke but it can also be a bad alternator indicator wire to the choke, as the choke relay isn't your typical grounded circuit. If you see ANY dip in the other indicator lights (battery, oil pressure) just before the choke light comes on indicating a drop in voltage, it's a good bet the problem is with the alternator. Old repair manuals suggest looking at the following when the CHOKE light goes on: (1) Charging system, (and triple check wiring to and from alternator), (2) an open circuit on choke heater element, (3) loss of any electrical grounds on that circuit, (4) the choke heater relay itself, check the coil resistance with a multimeter, or swap it with a similarly rated one.
