what tool(s) do I need and how do I do it?

You'll only need one special tool, a tie rod wrench. You can buy a cheap one at Harbor Freight, or you might find a local auto parts store that rents or loans them out. I think I paid about $30 at HF for a set that handles most tie rod nut sizes.
