No reverse

The transmission just went out in
my 2000 Dakota. Like there is
nothing there. It's a 4.7 2 wheel
drive 5 speed manual. And the
gears will grind "sometimes" when
downshifting from third into
second.

On a 2000? It's probably time for a transmission rebuild. Have a local shop diagnose your issue.

Is it possible that the problem is actual the shifter linkage being misaligned which is keeping you from finding the gears? Basically the gears are all still there but you can’t get to them. Does the grinding noise you get sound like you missed second or third gear while up shifting? If it is a similar sound you need to check the alignment inside the shifter box on top of the tranny that the shifter lever attaches to
