Smoke from exhaust when starting in morning

Asked by Scott Jan 15, 2019 at 10:10 AM about the 2014 Ford Escape SE FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Smoke comes from exhaust only after sitting
for lengthy amounts of time, such as morning
and after work. It only last for about 15
seconds then goes away. Smells like oil.
Sometimes when stopping at a light, can
smell inside vehicle but goes away quickly.

I have had the exact same thing happen to my 2014 Ford Escape. I e had a lot of issues with my engine coolant being low. Many trips to the dealership. Have you had any similar issues? I’m wondering if the smell/ smoke is related.

Mine did exactly the same thing! It was the turbo. Note from dealer During the inspection we found the turbocharger leaking externally and internally into the CAC Tube. This is covered under your powertrain warranty. So no charge to you. We will need to repair this issue first then retest. Since the oil is leaking into the CAC Tube this can cause abnormal smoke from exhaust and abnormal smells. The vehicle should be ready by end of week next week. (04/19/19) I will keep you updated. dealer under warranty.

Scott, what ended up being the issue? I just bought a used 2016 Ford Escape with 36k miles and I’m having the same problem. Hoping it’s covered under 60 day warranty or the extended warrant I bought.

Jackie, seems that I have the same issue as you on a 2013 Escape I just purchased with 88k miles. Wondering what the final fix was (o ring, etc)? Thanks

I had the same problem. My car is currently at the dealership and they said that my turbo needed to be replaced. I didn't have a smell but the smoke would happen anytime I just let the car run without driving it.

My experience with bluish smoke. 2017 Escape purchased used in 2020 with 37K miles on it. About two weeks after driving it, noted light bluish smoke when I stomped on the gas pedal - a lot of it. Took the dealer a few days to reproduce and diagnose. They did try to play it off, "It'll go away", but I had done some research and told them which technical service bulletins to reference. This is a known issue by Ford: a small amount of coolant leaks into cylinders, which eventually blows out the exhaust as bluish smoke. The fix is a block replacement. This is a known and well-documented issue with this engine; lots of technical service bulletins and a class action lawsuit.

That "smoke" is actually vapor from uncombusted fuel. disappears when engine's warmed up.

When gasoline is burned it makes two things. Carbon dioxide and water vapor. When the engine is cold or if the air is cold enough the moisture condenses into a fog that may look like smoke to some people.

Mine does the same 2017 with 137,000. Just started doing it in the morning only for about 10 seconds then goes away for the day. Looks blueish color. Should I worry?
