'07 CVPI Instrument Cluster (Non-digital gauges)
Asked by Don May 14, 2015 at 03:53 PM about the 2007 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
2007 Ford Crown Vic Police Interceptor -Has anyone with a CVPI experienced all the
gauges (non digital) crashing to "0" the going back up again? It seems arbitrary (I can't
make it happen) and they can stay down anywhere from 10 seconds to 15 minutes.
Everything else still works. I just can't tell:
1. my MPH
2. RPM's
3. fuel in tank
4. engine temp
Also the digital odometer stopped coming on or its too dim to see. This happened on
its own. It doesn't seem to be part of the gauge issue. Is there anything I can check
before pulling the dash?

Loose connections to the battery and lights can generate a discharge to these and others gauges. There are some recalls for this year. Check for these online. Check dimmer switch, cruise control stuck on or left on can cause system faults. Simple diagnostic with OBD11 will tell you the code to reset this. Relays cost a few dollars, fuses and fuse box cleanliness can cause problems. Other electrical can include wiring. There are simple tips only for specific problem available through Ford online. Last resort as this can cost.
Common problem with these instrument clusters. They can be repaired for both the intermittent gauges and odometer dark or very dim. Google mrwhizard for more info.
Could it b alternator
Mine does the same (2007 CVPI). Internet research implicates a chafed wire in the steering column that comes from the O/D button on the gearshift lever. I will attempt a fix of mine soon.
my son just bought a 2007 CVPI from Mass. we need it to pass Ct emissions. # 1 the compuiter vin doesnt match car & title. #2 the odometer light is out. they told us very common issue come back when light is on, if ever, meanwhile we have 10 days per dmv with these temp plates. what a pain in the butt.
Look for wire chafing where vehicle harness crosses over frame rail on left front between bumper and frame.
My mom has an 07 cvpi. Instrument cluster was sporadically going out and has now stopped working 95% of the time. Did some research and heard about the issue with the overdrive wire in shifter rubbing thru. Pulled apart the dash and inspected wire, this was not the cause. The harness connection at the cluster seems to be bad. Consulted with a guy who is very familiar with the crown vics and was told its a common issue, only real fix is to replace cluster. Car is due for emissions, wont pass because of non working temp gauge. Trying to find one that's not 400 dollars, dont want to put in a used one and go thru this again. This car has grown on me, I do like it. But its been one problem after another, even with low miles for the year.
