Chevy Captiva sport 2014, about 50,000 miles . Key stuck

this happened to me. 2014 captiva 43k miles. Paid dealership $120 to hook up computer to check anything and everything and it's the shifter. Display reads P but shifter isn't registering park and releasing the key. There's a hidden key release button btwn the dash and wheel that's what I've been using cause I don't have $600 for part and service. BUT, it's been a couple months and the problem fixed itself!!! I got lucky!!!

Join the club. I have had issues with mine and Dealership told me unless it was doing it when I brought it in they could not help me. Took it to a local automotive garage and they ray a lot of tests re-sent some memory boards and it has been fine. HOWEVER they said the main board (BSM, I think he called it) may function for a while and if I have any further issues he could replace it and reset it a lot cheaper then the dealership would charge you for the same thing. It seems like that is a very common problem with these. All of the problems were electric and drained my battery. So I had to get a new battery and that would have caused the guys key getting stuck in the ingnition. Love my car to death but ............

This seems super stupid but happened with my wife's car and her mother's impala. Was told buy dealership to Remove everything extra on your keys, little shopping tags, lanyards, any charms etc. Once we removed these keys came right out and no trouble since.

It’s the safety switch. Mine does the same thing. My key will not turn off unless I hold the switch down behind the steering wheel

I had the same problem. I think it's a safety measure. After it happened many times I realized it was the steering wheel. It was locked in. Just turn it hard to the right. it will move a little then turn the key. Good luck!.

I had the same problem for awhile it comes and goes. I use to have to start it am made sure tires were perfectly straight them turned it off. I did it a few times. Then I had a problem with my traction control sensor and had to get it towed home cause it wouldn't go forward or backward. When I got home it seems like after it cooled down it was drivable and lights went off. I ended up taking it to someone and they changed a heat sensor. It was vibrating really bad at 60. My newest problem now is the fan stopped working and now I have to turn on a/c to kick back on and all my lights stopped working again. I'm so disappointed with this car but I can't trade it in.

Best Answer This is Captivaowner. Happened again on July 28th. Took it back to dealership that “fixed” it before. No power, key stuck in ignition. They tested all fuses, even tried jumping it, would not start, all fuses checked out ok. Tech slapped the under the hood fuse block and all lights and power came back on. Tech installed a new under the hood fuse block due to internal failure. This was on July 31,2019. Have had no problems since

This has been happening to me. Usually I just restart the car and it comes out the second time. Not today!! When the car was off I put it in reverse, then back in park. The key came right out. Almost like it is showing it is in park but the car doesn’t believe it is so the safety feature kicks in and will not allow you to remove your key.

I recently bought a 2012 Chevy captiva sport. I was having problems with the key getting stuck in the ACC position. I was told about $350.00 to fix it. So I did a little of my own research and I’ve found that I can’t have the steering wheel telescope out, it needed to be pushed in almost all the way. I haven’t had the key problem since ! Hope this is useful.

One thing that'll help as a workaround until you can get it fixed - keep pushing the button on the shifter (the button you hold down when you shift) until you hear a faint "click" on the steering column. It's a very faint sound, you'll want to turn your radio/ac/whatever off in order to hear it. It's not a permanent solution, but it'll work in a pinch so you're not not draining your battery by leaving your keys in. Once you hear that click, you should be able to turn your keys and remove them.

Car will shut off as soon as i stop. No tech can fix the problem. Not even the car dealership. They want to keep your car and charge you thousands of dollars. I did some research. Trouble is in the safety circuit--Body control Module. BCM. But that cost over $800. So, I found that when car shut off. Disconnect the battery pole.. and reconnect it. The car will start again...until..a week or two..and sometimes less. and, repeat the process. Doing it over a year now!until i could replace the BCM???Good luck!.

I have a 2012 Chevy Captiva sport and for over a year I had had trouble with it not releasing the key. Sometimes if it wouldn't release if I would start it back up and turn it off real quick it would release the key but then sometimes it wouldn't. I had watched videos of a guy taking the back of the steering wheel cover off to get to the little piece that is sticking but you don't have to do that. When it sticks you don't have to have any tools and you don't have to have your steering wheel in any certain place to get it to release and you don't have to take anything apart and you don't have to back up and put it in drive and put it in reverse or do any of that. On the back of the steering wheel between the hardcover and your gauges there is that soft leather piece and if you just run your finger over the top of it till you get to the back side of where the key goes in the ignition and just push in on the leather you'll feel that little nodule or whatever they call it that is getting stuck there and not releasing the key and all you have to do is touch it and it will release the key. It's really easy to find as long as you run your finger over to the back side of where you have stuck the key in you'll be able to feel that little piece that moves forward when you put your key in the ignition and start the car. It just gets stuck sometimes and it won't let the key release but once you touch it it will go back to the spot it's supposed to be in and your key is free free free!
