2005 GMC Canyon lifter rattle on cold start

Yes Nicola, its fairly common for vehicle's lifters to rattle for a moment after the engine is started from cold. What this means is that the oil has settled in the engine and it takes a few seconds for the viscosity of the oils to flow around the cylinder walls. Once the engine oil gets flowing and warms up the lifter rattle should completely subside. If it doesn't then there could be a problem. It's always a good idea to have silence when you turn the key over from a cold start to listen for any inconsistencies in your motor. In fact during cold months, vehicles that are stored outside over night, sometimes have domestic animals that want to be near the motor from its heat the night before. This happened to my cat when I was just a kid, he crawled inside the fan belt cover to sleep against the warm engine block. When my mom started the engine the fan cut the cat up so bad it wouldve killed any other creature beside the infamously hard to kill feline! The cat(frisco) actually lived thru it & took care of him for months until he was healthy enough to live a normal life. My point is this, my father always taught is to start the engines of vehicles with the radio off. Had we not done this we wouldn't, have heard Frisko screaming in pain.
