2014 Sport / 5.7 / MPG

Asked by CMH71 Jan 28, 2018 at 01:54 PM about the 2014 RAM 1500 Sport Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: General

I’m the original owner and have always gotten
16/17 city - 20/23 highway until last year @ 45k
miles I removed the factory rims and put custom
rims on still with standar 20” tires. Since then, I
average 13/14.5 city - 18/20 highway + it feels like
the truck does NOT coast as freely. ??

Everything except the rims are original stock. No
aftermarket items. Did the used tire place selling the
rims install them incorrectly? Are the new rims
heavier than the OEM Aluminum rims? Is it possible
there is something “rubbing” or preventing the free
spin of the tires since install?

I feather the pedal and drive like my grandfather
hence the mpg prior to the rims.  Anyone with
suggestions please let me know.

I have a 2014 Ram Hemi 5.7 4x4 quad cab and it has never got 20 mpg on the highway. If you are using the onboard readout to establish fuel mileage then the truck is likely fibbing to you. When mine says it got 18 mpg the calculated fuel mileage will be around 16.6 or 16.7. If the tire size is the same about the only place the wheels could rub would be against the brake calipers. It is not stuck in 4 wheel drive is it?

Thank you for your response. I’ve done the calculations and those are actual miles per gallon. From the day I got it I feathered the pedal so it has always gotten real good mileage. Four-wheel-drive works navigation and disengaged it recently. I know there is a piece of the wheel hub I saw them remove when I took factory rams off but I do not know what it was or if it is relevant? Even if the MPG wasn’t accurate to begin with it is still getting 2 to 2.5 MPG less. Doesn’t make sense.

My 2014 ram 1500 5.7 crew cab with 8 speed trans. gets 19.5 to 20 mpg all the time, unless I drag race from every stop light. Going to and from Fla. 1600 miles round trip, I was getting 21.8 mpg at 70 mph. That is filling up and then figuring gas mileage, not what it tells me. I run 20 in. tires. Hope this helps. My 2014 is the worst ever of any truck ! However when I purchase it 35s were on it with a small lift. Hey 14 mpg at 70 , pulling a trailer 10 mpg! 16x7 van trailer 9 mpg . I know the wheels don’t help but this is crazy. Good thing it will pull anything horse power great
