03 GMC Envoy SLT; Key Stuck In Ignition

Asked by SadGMCOwner May 19, 2020 at 03:14 PM about the 2003 GMC Envoy 4 Dr SLT 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2003 GMC Envoy SLT. Your average
red with gray leather interior, nothing fancy.
But it’s having this cute issue where it won’t
release my key from the ignition. Had a severe
battery failure, car died in drive. Got it towed
home, key won’t release. Had a similar issue
before, but when the mechanic restored full
power to my vehicle he was able to remove
the key. Programmed a new key and
everything was great. This time, I got my
battery in, full power was restored, and my
key won’t turn to the complete OFF position
and my shifter slides between P all the way to
1 without stepping on the brakes. Went ahead
and removed entire center console, cleaned
solenoid which was already clean and
functioning fine but what the heck, check the
cable under the car to the transmission just in
case, and still absolutely nothing. Even found
a photo and multiple suggestions stating to
poke a button under the steering column to
manually release key, and I must be an idiot or
something is very wrong because there is just
empty space where a button might go. Any
help at all would be GREATLY appreciated!
Even if you can tell me that I need to clear my
codes with a reader that would be fantastic;
everyone that I talk to says it won’t do any
good. Ready to try just about anything at this
point because turning it off with the negative
cable disconnection is getting sickening.
Bought it off a salvage yard as a dumpy run
around car, but I like it and would like to see it
keep going if it can.

Under the steering wheel, there will be EITHER a hole, or an indentation where a hole was supposed to be. Sounds like the hole was never completed. Need to carefully drill it out where the indentation is. Sounds like you've done your due diligence, I'd look at possibly being your ignition switch as the culprit, or the ground on the tranny, passenger side under carpet.
