Car/engine makes vibration noise when at 2000RPM

Asked by Kyle Feb 03, 2017 at 02:10 AM about the 2014 Nissan Altima 2.5 S

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Whenever my RPM gauge is at 2000RPM (no matter if im going 40 or 80) it makes this vibration noise. The RPM meter itself acts a little unusual because no matter if im going 30,40,60,70,90 ... the meter alwats wants to be at 2000RPM. Is that normal?

If that is all you are getting out of the engine is 2000 RPM, then no that is not normal. Hard to say what this is. You may need to take it into a garage to be checked out. My first thought was the motor mounts may need replacing, but the 2000 RPM thing is something different in itself.

I can definitely get more RPM, but its as if whenever im traveling and come to a constant speed it tends to go down to 2000 for some reason.

The transmission picks the gear that will give you enough power to cruise at the speed you pick. 2,000 rpm is probably adequate to propel your car in the type of driving you do. 2,000 rpm at 80 mph is not so likely though. I would expect your car to need 2,500 to 3,000 rpm at that speed.

Thats what i was thinking. When its cold as F*#% outside when i go to work (5am in MN) it seems to function like it is supposed to but after the car 'warms up' or after 5-10 minutes, it goes back to acting naughty. Ill have to go get it checked out next weekend.

I would suspect the CVT. Nissan CVT's are notorious for problems.

NIssan knows their CVT is crap so hit up your dealer for a new one even if you are out of warranty.

What do you have to lose by asking Nissan for a new transmission?

As others say, you have a CVT transmission (as I do). It will try to stay at 2000rpm to give you the best gas milage, that is normal operation. The noise is a separate problem.
