How does the buy back guarantee work?

As far as I know Cargurus doesn't have a policy as this is an ad site. Each dealer will have their own program and rules. Check with the selling dealer that is selling the vehicle you are interested in. Where did you see that information? maybe email user_support@cargurus.com to verify?
This makes it seem like they have a policy? If not it’s borderline false advertising. It may presume if you get scammed, then they will pay you back
CG's does not sell cars so I am not sure how or why they would buy back what they did not sell.

I should NOT have to explain the Buyback Protection -- CarGurus SHOULD, but they don't, so I will to be HELPFUL, unlike CarGurus, and explain it, but first a WARNING: Be VERY WARY of "Options" listed on CarGurus -- actually be very wary of EVERYTHING on CarGurus. They do NOT warrant ANY information on their website, what the dealer "tells" them, is what you see -- GIGO... Garbage In, Garbage Out -- if what the dealer tells them is incorrect, too bad for you. Be careful: I bought a car wherein CarGurus had listed options, MANY options, that were NOT on the vehicle. I should have suspected something was wrong when a VIN check at KBB.com basically indicated, "You can't have BOTH of those packages you are selecting." -- Buyer BEWARE. They back NOTHING and they don't care. Free price estimate using the VIN here: https://www.kbb.com/whats-my-car-worth/ Buyback Protection: CarGurus partners with AutoCheck, a Division of Experian. This is not for problems with the vehicle itself, which is why CarGurus can offer it even though they don't sell cars (or necessarily provide accurate vehicle information). It provides protection for problems with the Title information provided to, from, and by the DMV in all States, they call this a "Branded Title" and includes things like an incorrect Odometer, Flood Damage or if the Vehicle was totaled or scrapped and not reported to a DMV -- I will attach a picture of the coverage. While it doesn't cover mechanical problems, it is free if you order the report for $20 bucks, and it would be very good to have if you discover your vehicle was wrecked or flooded and that it was never reported to the DMV, which is REQUIRED by law. I'm not exactly sure how one would find out there was erroneous info at the DMV, but if it does happen, you're covered. On the CarGurus site you click to buy the vehicle report. That brings you to AutoCheck. You can buy 1 Report, good for 21 days, for $20 bucks or 5 reports for 21 days for about $40 bucks. I'm looking at older vehicles, around 2011 - 2012 to replace my got-screwed-by-CarGurus-car without the options they listed, so now I'm WARY, and since I'm still shopping I bought 5 Reports. After the CarGurus cock-up (which may have been caused by THEM, or by a crap-dealer uploading the not-included-options) I think it's pretty important to buy the report, at least 1 on the vehicle you think you're going to buy. If you buy the report it will tell you if the vehicle qualifies for the Buyback Protection. If it does NOT qualify, I think that tells you there is ALREADY a problem with the information at a DMV somewhere in the U.S., so... good to know. If the vehicle qualifies, and since you bought the report, you can then register the vehicle for Buy Protection from AutoCheck/Experian. You have to register it within 90 days of purchase and you have to file the claim within 1 year. In the end, I don't know how valuable the Buyback Protection turns out to be in real world experiences, but it's free if you buy the Report, and I DO think the report IS important and valuable. I'm going to look at a vehicle today that listed two accidents, which is normally a very hard NO for me, but... it's a hard-to-find vehicle in mint condition so I wanted to know about the accidents. The report showed they were very minor with no airbag deployment, so it was totally worth buying the report in my case. There you have it. You're welcome CarGurus -- thanks for nothing.
