My 2014 Ford Edge is making a strange sound (high pitch metallic sound)

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2014 Ford Edge is making a strange sound (high pitch metallic sound). I've
taken it to the dealer and shown them video but they don't know what it is. They
said they checked the brakes and belts. I took the mechanic for a test drive and,
of course, it didn't occur. But it happens every time I take my car out.
I can add video if needed.

A video would help. Can you isolate the sound to a wheel or the engine bay?

Here are a couple videos of the sound, one with windows closed, one with windows open http://networkdoctor.d.pr/9NYrvI http://networkdoctor.d.pr/xzLabE

I think it's wheel or brake related. It does not sound engine or transmission related. There's a tang on the brake pad designed to rub against the rotor and make a "screech" when pads get low, this sounds like that. Another possibility is a bad wheel bearing. I can't imagine any mechanic or shop not hearing this sounds, if it is indeed the brake pads getting low, the sound will steadily get worse, and wet roads may change how it sounds. Keep in mind I can only make guesses based on very little information, a shop should look at this, you never want to gamble when it comes to brakes or wheel bearings.

My 2014 Edge makes the exact same sound. pressing or depressing brakes do not alter the noise at all. The sound is sporadic and doesn't seem to be affected by speed. It's very annoying though!

Shame we never heard back from OP whether they solved issue or not. Christine, the sound in the video seemed to match tire RPM, so OPs noise was likely a wheel bearing, CV axle, or brake related. If yours is not affected by speed, it may be engine related.

The sound doesn't seem to change with my speed or whether or not I am pressing on the gas or break. It is so weird. I just cant make any connection as to what it is. It just comes and goes.

My mechanic finally figured it out. He said he saw it once before in his long career. Not sure how to describe it but it had to do with the axle rubbing against something. And he had to somehow lubricate or shave that area down. It's not dangerous, just annoying. Sorry I don't have precise details but ask your mechanic to take a look at the axle.

My girlfriends 2014 Edge making similar sound. I noticed it the other day and assumed it was an a/c clutch going bad, but today i took the vehicle to fuel up and noticed it only did it when i gave it gas. When i got home i checked under the hood and traced the sound to a fuel assembly on the driver side where the fuel line comes up. I haven't assessed what that line connects to yet.

Did anyone figure this out?? My car is making the same noise. Took it to a couple different mechanics who didn’t know what it is either....

I’m currently at the dealership now. I bought a used 2014 For Edge SEL on a Thursday 6/11.... Friday(next day) 6/12 as soon as it heated up even just a little we started hearing the noise, a progressively loud rotation squealing started coming from the rear passenger side. It was louder when beaks were not applied. Obviously brakes stopped the noise. 4 visits later at the dealership here I sit now it is 6/20. New brakes all around, new wheel bearings front and back. I was sold a warranty but was not told it was only a PowerTrain warranty. Never given the option to purchase the next warranty up, which would have covered these costs. Now I’m over $330 in on this car and it is still not fixed. They tried to let me drive if off the lot and told me it was fixed. But they could not explain to me why the noise is happening....LOL. Why would anyone who hasn’t even made their first payment accept that kind of BS answer!!!??? Anyway, IF they do figure it out I will make sure to post it here. In the very beginning I had hoped to was just the caliper/brake clips or something easy. And if you ever happen visit Nissan in McDonough Georgia, make sure to NOT buy anything used from there. Even if they sell you the warranty they do not want to make it right....

My 2014 Ford Edge Sport also makes this noise. Seems to happen when you punch the gas a bit then let off.
